Hi guys I caught a really cool fishing rod with Mending 1, Luck of the sea 2, and Lure 2, but the durability is like 0! I know it has mending but I don't want to break the fishing pole. What should I do to get its durability up?
With Mending, the experience you get from killing mobs go towards mending any items with that enchantment in your inventory. so really, go out and kill some mobs. The way it works is when you get exp, it searches for any items in your hotbar with the mending enchantment and if there are any, the exp goes towards fixing them and not your exp bar.
Stuff that has the 'mending' enchantment simply uses experience orbs to mend the item, it doesn't matter where the orbs come from. If I had that fishing rod, I'd wait until night and shoot a couple baddies with arrows, then switch to my fishing rod, and finally I'd run over where I shot the baddies and pick up all the experience orbs (the 'mend' enchantment doesn't work on tools and weapons unless you're holding that tool or weapon when you pick up the experience orbs). When the durability of your fishing rod goes up a little bit, then you should be able to earn enough experience fishing to 'mend' the fishing rod up to full strength.
You can also hold the mending item in your left hand instead of a shield and use the right hand to mine coal, redstone, or Lapis (or even Nether Quartz) and the XP will heal your mending item. You can fight with the right while the left mends. Also unload your furnaces with the pole in your hand. Those are just a few ways to mend.
When you absirb an xp orb, game looks for any equipped Mending items. Includes armor, main hand and off hand items. Then it randomly chooses one such item. If item is not at full durability, xp goes to repair it. Otherwise, xp is added to your xp bar. Which means if you are wearing a set of mending armor at full durability, and hold your rod, there is only about 20% chance xp will go to the rod.
If you want to repair an item as quickly as possible, remove any other equipped Mending stuff.
A quick and safe way to earn XP fast for mending is to keep a pen full of animals. When the pen gets too full, kill a bunch of them and feed the rest to make them breed. You get xp for both killing and breeding.

Don't you get XP from Smelting ?? that's just as safe
IIRC there's a way to do MASS smelting & the Furnace 'stores' the XP - to get all that XP back you just had to remove 1 stack of items from furnace (or something like that) - Xumavoid did a 'shop' on the Hermitcraft server that did something like this - here's a video he did about the system
All you have to do is set up a furnace & go off to do something else (Farm/Mine/AFK fishing etc) - come back .. hold the fishing rod in left hand...grab the stuff from furnace & .. eureka ... mass XP

Thank you so much! I was wondering why the durability wasn't going up, I will hold the fishing rod

Dunno if they changed it, but it works like this:
