Your location sections, seems a bit to asthetic, rather then functionality, which is what I thought this thread was about. I suggest updating that section, and mention the challenges and gains from living in certain biomes, also for version 1.3 you should mention the cocoa bean farm, and living in a larger biomes world. PS with larger biomes, beaches(which surprised me to be a actual biome) become nice galapago chain islands.
This is a really handy thread, good to use as a checklist. One thing for location is to make sure you're relatively near a spawner of some sort (assuming you're in the Overworld) in case you want to make an xp farm.

Off topic (slightly), but I think you will get a lot more flak for your caving guide. I cave any way I want and am offended by the "always put torches on the right wall" people who think they can tell me how to cave.
On topic: Nice guide, maybe add a section for portal rooms and that kind of stuff.
You can make a nether wart farm in the nether but those cause you to have to spend large amounts of time in the nether as the wart will not grow anywhere else. (Not even on your face ) I reccomend one of these farms because It allows you to be able to make lots of potions! On my current survival, I have a house and in that house is an entrance to a branch mine which has a bunch of rooms with different uttilities before the mine actually started. I have a kitchen which is where I cook and store all of my food. A crafting room for crafting and smelting ores. A farm. A portal room. An enchanting room. A brewing room. I also have a room with two pink sheep that I FOUND not dyed. There is a whole herd in a tundra biome near my house! I also had the tornado mod for a while and that ripped a little trench you could call it that exposed a freakin dungeon!!! I also have a bedroom with a jukebox. I also made a room for wool and wool dye storage. I decided to do some exploring and found that I was living on a HUGE island!. I found a NPC village and a ravine! My nightly mob battles have brought me spoils of war inculding music disk "blocks" and "cat", and iron sword, an iron shovel and other drops. I am currently working on finishing my enchanting room. In the nether I have made a base that surrounds my portal back to the overworld and a nether wart farm. Just let me know if you want me to put a link so you can download the save!
I confess to not having gone back and read the posts since I last posted in this thread, but I'll throw a new idea on the pile that really made my day today.
A fully automatic streetlamp electrical grid complete with daylight detector building. I've sat and watched my 4 main roads all day today turn on and off on their own its gorgeous to see. My only hiccup is the time it takes for the grass block to die off and turn the lights on at night is quite random in the detect building.
I really like this (and you can tell because it's my banner now).
This will be helpful when I take a break from my "Build Portfolio" (also my old sig) and get back to real-survival. I have always wanted a thread like this, and you have finally made one. Yay!
Mushrooms! Yay! Mushrooms are incredibly useful in Minecraft. Bonemeal a mushroom to turn it into a Giant Mushroom, perfect for making a cute little house out of. Or, bonemeal mushrooms, and then break the mushroom blocks to harvest regular mushrooms! Make some bowls out of wood in your crafting bench, and then craft mushroom stew on the fly (it doesn't require a crafting bench). Open the spoiler for a photo of a giant mushroom!"
Yes, it does require a crafting bench.
Saw one of your earlier posts on page 2, and I tested it, and it works!
