Hello, I tried to build a mob farm today, and the mobs wont spawn, no matter how much I stand on a Y:190 platform or else. Here are the things I checked:
Spawning platform at Y:128: Check, has worked before
Not on peaceful: Check
standing on Y:190 tower: Check, wont work
Lighted all areas: Check
I gave up. Here is a pic anyways: http://i.imgur.com/yfoIZtv.pngI didnt branch fully because I gave up having to do 20 minutes of mining blocks just to make this farm work.
I meant the inside of the spawner so we can see what's going on.
Okay so a couple questions:
1) Are the mobs just suppose to fall out the bottom to their death? It looks like there is a hole. If yes, they could be despawning before they hit the ground because you are standing at y:190 and if they are more than 128 blocks away they will go poof.
2) Have you opened the debug screen (f3) and looked at the E value in the second row to confirm they aren't actually spawning? When you are standing on a platform that high up you have no other way of confirming mob spawns and if you go inside the spawner you will most likely be too close and prevent any mobs from spawning. This is not always the case but judging from the size of your trap it looks small so I am guessing you only have 1 layer for a spawning platform.
Also, the mobs may be spawning and just not moving around too much because you are so far away. If you don't have some sort of flushing system or a way to get the mobs into the kill chamber/waterways than the farm won't work very well. This is a major reason why we need pics of the inside.
Don't give up you have a good foundation started and I am sure you put in a decent amount of time trying to get it working. These can be tricky if you don't understand the mechanics behind them.

The inside is the same as every other mob farm. I just junked up the materials because I didnt have enough cobble for it.
Please answer my other questions and provide pictures of the inside. Not all mob spawners have the same spawning pads so saying it is a generic version means nothing. Based on the information you've provided there is no reason for this not to work. It will be very slow because it's small but you should still be getting spawns.
Idk what you are doing with those branches. As long as you are >16m and <128m from the mobs they should be spawning. y:190 is perfectly fine no reason that I know of to branch out like that.
I just made a random creative survival world and made a 10x10x4 cube at y:128. I than flew up to y:190 and had 10 entities in about 30 seconds. At this point I can only conclude it is something with your design.. Too much lighting, not enough room for mobs to spawn, etc..
How long did you sit around watching your E value?
How long did you sit around watching your E value?
For 3 minutes. Here is the images of the inside too:
The covered hole was because you said that mobs despawn far away in 128 blocks. I realized that I built the spawning platform at 128, so really they despawn when im at y:0,
Ok, I copied the 4 chunks where my spawner lies in to a void world, and well... it crashed after 5 minutes. So it works, its just that the mob overflow from the chunk radius prevents things to spawn once in a while.
His guys, I would like to ask smt about why my mob trap is not working..... I'm not very good at these kinds of things and I would really appreciate your help and advice!
Basically, I built this hi altitude fall damage-type mob trap to get drops. I made a hollow 22x22 hollow column cobblestone from y200 to sea level using lava molding. The collection point is just above the cloud level, a platform 20x20 fitting inside the column. I access the collection point via a 1block tower connected to it.
The spawning pads are 2 block high, about 25 blocks from the collection point. Each level has 4 8x8 cobblestone blocks pads, with a 2 block wide canal in between the pads on the first level, and the 2, 3 and 4th level has just holes where the canals are on he firsts level. 2 blocks are between each 2 level so enderman cannot spawn. Mobs are supposed to spawn on the pads (totally dark), drop into the canal, get carried by the water to the edge of the 2x2 hole, where it will fall to the collection level and get killed by fall damage.
The problem I face is not not being able to kill the mobs, but the hostile mobs are not even spawning inside the trap at all, even though I was on hard difficulty. Except a single spider actually
On YouTube I've seen smaller similar trap with only 3 layers churning out thousands of drops every hour, I just have no idea why mine is not working.
I'm getting really frustrated... Does anyone has any idea why? Any advise is appreciated. Besides, it would ev good if u are willing to take a look at my mob trap yourself.... I can send u the file via email.
ok a few things for everyone that is having problems to check.
first and foremost, the Y value of the mob trap means nothing if you haven't built it in the right place... if you are over ocean you are fine, if not, then you need to check the distance from the nearest ground to where you stand - if the ground, and parts of the underground are within range - then you mobs are spawning down there and you need to light up the surface and caves. - - - this is the reason for over 90% of mob trap spawning problems - make sure that mobs can not spawn anywhere else except in your trap.
secondly mobs will not walk off the pads and into the channels anymore, and haven't for several versions of the game. flushing systems work best in my experience - here is a good design/tutorial for building a flushing system - - I usually add a clock timer that flush's the pads every 20-30 seconds or so when I build this one.
Spiders will clog up your system, I saw one person had one spawn - use half slabs to break up 3x2 secions on your spawn pads so that won't happen.
finally, there has been a on going bug that allows mobs to spawn at the edge of the current loaded chunks, putting some of them into the unloaded chunks... when this happens those mobs freeze and fill in your mob cap - here is an in debth video detailing this problem and solutions. -
Hello, i guess you have the same problem of the OP.
Do your mob need to walk and fall into the canals, in order to enter the killing machine? If yes, the efficiency of this type of mob farm is extremely low these days. My guess is that the youtube video that you saw was just quite old, therefore it doesn't work anymore in newest minecraft.
Considere changing to the X-spawner mob farm, that works in 1.8 great (tested myself, you can find the tutorial in my previous message).
