Okay so I got my house all set up nicely and got animals, made a garden and all that and then I decided I wanted to start breeding wolves. I went on a VERY long hunt looking for a pack and I finally found some but then I have no idea how to get back home I've walked all over and I've made my survival into creative and flown all around and it's just impossible to find my house. Is there anything else I can do to find it?? I didn't make my house near my start spawn because I wanted to live in another biome area. This is also my own multiplayer server that I created if that matters in finding it. Just someone please help me find my house cause I think I'll cry if I don't lol
On a side note, I only had enough bones to tame one wolf and he followed me for about 2 days straight and then I just looked back at one point and he wasn't there. Is there any way to get him back also? I looked a bit for him but then I just really wanted to get back home so I left.He was tamed and he wasn't sitting so I'm not sure where he went.
Welp, if you don't know coordinates, you could probably grab a mapping tool (I use Minutor) to look around the places where you've been for signs of civilization.
I did this once too and it took me 2 days. From then on I left torch "bread crumbs" and cobblestone columns to follow until I got around to building my superhighways and rail system.
You can download Unmined and it will create a zoomable, pannable map of your world, which you can use to find your house (a bit outdated, but it just doesn't render new blocks properly). Also, you can use Rei's Minimap (although only if you are still using 1.6.2) to set a waypoint where your house it and not worry about losing it (alternatively, you can press F3 to see your coordinates (X, Y, Z; only X, Z are really needed) and write them down).
As for your wolf, it may have died, as they are rather dumb (see the Wiki) and often injure themselves, plus a newly tamed wolf will have less than full health unless you feed it meat (you can even feed them rotten flesh); also, periodically look at their tail to make sure they aren't running low on health (it should be pointing up at an angle; as their health goes down, it goes down). Note also they they won't teleport to you if you cross a big body of water, large enough to unload the chunks they are in.
If you are reading this then you you totally ignored what I said about not opening that spoiler three spoilers ago.. Don't you remember? I said "DO NOT OPEN THAT SPOILER!!! But no, you were a rebel and did it anyway!
AMIDST only shows you biomes and the locations of structures, not a map of your actual world, making it only useful if you can recognize the biome where your house is, and only from its shape, or if it is a rare biome (it does show your current location, but nothing else).
Thank you so much everyone! I used Minutor and did the coordinance to where I lived. It felt SO good to see my house in view! Lol I was so sick of flying around the darn map and after using minutor I realized I was far away from the house and flying the exact opposite way. What ways do y'all use to NOT get lost? I know y'all mentioned using torches but does the map work good that you can make? And is there a way I can use a cheat to get back home if I get lost? My niece said she uses "/back" to get back to her house if she's lost but that wasn't working for me for some reason.
What do I use to not get lost? Torches lol. Simple. Also going in one straight direction helps keep things into perspective when you're traveling far distances. I really get frusterated when I finally do manage to get lost so I've become extremely OCD when going on long adventures. I travel with many torches and plenty of food. I'm not sure what you mean when you say "but does the map work good that you can make" mind clarifying?

/back is not a vanilla command. You can instead use /kill, which will kill yourself and drop your items, while taking you to your spawnpoint (whether it's the last bed you slept in, or the default world spawn). If you have cheats enabled, you can use the 'keepInventory' gamerule to prevent your items and XP from dropping:
/gamerule keepInventory true
And then turn it back off afterwards, if desired. Obviously not suitable for everybodys' playstyle, but is a relatable method to a /back command as requested.
Well, my tower is near enough to 0,0 that I need only head in that general direction and I will see it from far, far away. Plus, by now I've run many torch paths to/from it that once I "pick up the scent" it's just a matter of connecting dots - that's if I'm even travelling above ground. Most of my movement is now on my rail system.
The *best* thing you can do is grab a notebook/index card/any paper for your world and log the coordinates of your structures. Use Notepad on your computer even.
Early on, I tend to build single block towers out of dirt or (better yet) sand that I can see some distance, usually topped with a torch, often on the top of a hill. To build one of those, you drop a block of sand, stand on it, jump into the air and place a block under yourself. If you build too high you can harm yourself jumping off. I build the next one while the first one is still in sight, better yet if I can see two of them. You can use yellow flowers to help see them, not as good as torches, but better than nothing.
I write down the coordinates of where my house is (F3 button will give you that).
The ingame map made with a compass and paper will show you where you are if you are still within its confines and show your "blot" on the side of the map where you went off it. I've used that to find my way home too.
I also make trails of torches, but better if they are higher rather than lower. I've made arrows of flowers... arrows on the side of extreme hills facing my house with torches. A really tall single block tower with a ladder and a platform on top isn't that hard and can be seen a long ways.
You really just need to make note of your coordinates before running off on a long adventure. It's surprizing how many people spend a lot of time establishing base camps with homes, farms and mines, and yet they never check their coordinates.
It's really simple. From your front door, hit F3, and then F2 to take a screen shot. Now, whenever you want to go home, just head in the direction that takes you back to the X and Z coordinates in that picture. And if your base is under ground, make some kind of conspicuous marker that can be seen from a distance.
I have a Glowstone tower up on my roof. But my sky high mob farm is now my most visible landmark.
Also note that distance is divided by 8 in the Nether, so if you want to travel far, it can be a shortcut, albeit a dangerous one, and it's much easier to get lost there. Personally, I kind of like it there. Tunneling up into the roof of the Nether makes ot much easier, and somewhat safer to navigate.

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?

Just a few ideas.
