How do you do survive? Do you burrow underground then build a house later, stay underground, or build a house straight up? Post whatever you do in your survival worlds!
I generally find a cliff/cave/ravine and make an underground base. I usually stay in my base for a long while, so I make the floor wood which really brightens the room. When I make my final home (after finding diamond etc) I have one storey above ground, and numerous underneath for farming, storage, smelting and mines. My aboveground storey is mainly for looks, and generally has furniture or a patterned floor. Sadly, I almost never have a roof. anyway, here's some pictures of my current survival world (I've only been playing on this for a week):

I offer you advice in the form of criticism. You may follow it, or ignore me in a naive and blissful state.
I typically get digging right away. Come back up with diamonds, then focus on a mountain house.
I generally make it look nice as well. Then i get more basic nesesary things, such as a potion lab, then it all builds up!
If you are reading this then you you totally ignored what I said about not opening that spoiler three spoilers ago.. Don't you remember? I said "DO NOT OPEN THAT SPOILER!!! But no, you were a rebel and did it anyway!
Delve into the mines, come out with a good amount of materials, make my shelter, find a village, setup near, get a food stock from the village, get some potions, later on a beacon, and go on with my life!
I straight up make a crappy house. Them I start to mine until diamonds. After I make a huge house that usually has everything, until I get bored and delete the world. Then this cycles for a while xD.
I usually get straight to mining, find a nice location. Set up shop, and get back to mining. Once I'm content with my riches I'll get started on machines such as mob farms, iron farms (which better not get nerfed.....) etc. and then later progress to heading to the nether, end etc.
I usually make a small house, mine that delicious iron, start a farm, then I go to the nether. I haven't gone to the End. EVER.
Woah woah woah.... Hold up.... Time out!
You.. Ne.. Never been to the end? EVER!

I punched a bunch of trees, made a crafting table and a few tools, then gathered supplies until it was getting late. To avoid mobs for the night I swam out to an island (spawn was near ocean), made a furnace to burn some wood and torched the place up.
It was nice and peaceful out there, so I decided to use it as base camp. I have since built a small but efficient house with a variety of small farms, and have an ever growing mine deep down. I also have a sky high general mob farm and a Zombie spawner XP farm.
I have a Nether base and have found a fortress. I currently have 7 Wither Skeleton Skulls and 1 Nether Star (killed one Wither already). I also have so many Blaze Rods I am using them as furnace fuel.
I have located a Stronghold and beaten the Ender Dragon. I'm still exploring the Stronghold and the mine that intersects It. This weekend I found 2 more large libraries and a second portal room, which is odd, because I thought each Stronghold only had one End Portal room. I harvested the libraries and have stacks and stacks of books now.
My mine has yielded loads of Diamonds, so I have several full sets of Diamond armor, weapons and tools (well, except for a Diamond Hoe). Most are heavily enchanted.
Recently built an "Iron Puncher" Witch farm, but the area around it is riddled with caves, so unless I climb up 100+ blocks above it the spawn rates are poor.
Also built an under the island, underwater storage facility with large glass walls on the ocean sides.
Only been playing off and on for a few months, but my world is coming along nicely.

I'll have to agree here. We built our main shelter near a village we found with an already established farm of food, and an underground cave for mining. After that we started editing the houses, made a bigger farm, and added animals. We were lucky to have been near several biome types. I generally built up, not down. Building underground requires a lot of light, and seem restrictive because you have to knock out everything around you to build anything.

Generally I'll dig up some dirt and make myself a dirt house to start with and then at night I'll dig under my place and create a rock quarry. 90% of the time I'll build all of my structures above ground so that I can expand the physical landmark that my castle is.
I usually find a ravine, and dig a house at the bottom. I take dirt, sand, and food or seeds with me, and setup my farms there. I try to get everything from the ravine, then use the lapis to make my house look better, and slowly add a tunnel system and bridges. That's about all I do, but I try to get to the nether to make a potion lab, the old way, and then setup a bigger farm, a bigger base, and just expand down up and sideways. I've had a world going for about a year like this and I've cleared about 7000 blocks and a double chest of iron, diamonds, emeralds and coal.
Alone, I make a hole in a hill and dig myself a little hobbit hole. When I'm playing with other people (especially people who don't play mc a lot) I chop down a tree or two, convert it to planks, and let them knock themselves out. I often find I find myself surprised with what the other player has come up with, one time he decided to build a house where no two blocks of the same kind touched.

Lol, I've seen you say delicious iron in a few posts on the forums. Do you have a secret addiction to munching on iron?

Nope. Never got enough materials.
