Hey, here is a tip for you: You can make awesome windows w/o the need of window blocks but still functon like one! You make it by putting stairs around in a circle (top ones are upsidedow) wich would leave a whole block-wide window that looks like there is no window there, but mobs wont see you and arrows can't go though them! This is expecially good whenever you just want one block wide window centered in the middle of an even number of blocks wide wall, because the stair windows is centered on the edge of blocks!

okay, on a serious note: this is a pretty good guide
However, there is one thing you simply can't teach, and that's having style. You must find a style that also fits your gameplay.
For example: My houses do not have chairs/couches, because I do not use them, they are a waste of space to me. However, I do build complex chest storage rooms, large "libraries", and other such stuff.
Damn. Thanks a bunch for this guide. I've actually learn a few new tricks and I've been building for a few months now. Gotta say I'm humbled before some of the showcase examples. It doesn't matter if I can make an absolutely huge castle-like structure if it's all bland. I think my biggest mistake is, I like stone bricks too much and don't give enough credit to the potential of other blocks. For a castle mind you stone bricks should be the most abundant component, but when you have 99.9% bricks it's... grey. A long time.
