This is for people who want a more... scary experience with our vanilla zombies.
Immersion
First of all, please download and use Tissou’s Zombie Pack, which literally adds hundreds of different zombie skins, as well as new noises, to make your zombies actually appear threatening.
This texture pack also requires Optifine, which is now available for version 1.13.2; make sure that Random Mobs are enabled. You may also have to move the contents of the “MCpatcher” folder into the “Optifine” folder for the variants to work.
Tissou also recommends adding Vic’s Modern Warfare Mod for guns, and Mo-Bends to make your zombies lurch and limp after your flesh. Sadly though, these mods are only up to version 1.12.2.
Beginning a new infested world
Generate whatever world you want, so long as zombies can naturally spawn in them. Pick a random seed, your favorite seed, or even a flatland or buffet world.
Make sure you have cheats enabled, as you will have to set up some command blocks and redstone.
Because this challenge focuses on zombies, you will have to despawn most of the other hostiles in the Overworld.
How? First, go into Creative Mode, and use a compass to find the world spawn point. Next, flatten out a 6-by-6 area, and arrange one impulse and nine chain command blocks, like this easy-to-access example:
In the first command block, copy and paste this command:
Now power this command system with a hopper clock or an observer clock, and return to Survival Mode to begin your challenge! Don’t forget to turn off commandBlockOutput.
Rules of the Challenge
Despite what this command system adds, zombies can easily be cheesed or ignored by exploiting their limited AI. So to circumvent this, you need to abandon these exploits:
You must be in Hard difficulty
Zombies cannot break down doors at all in Normal or Easy difficulty.
All your builds must have at least one wooden door
However, you don’t only have to put in one door, and having multiple doors can serve as precious escape routes.
All your builds must have feasible routes the zombies can follow
Solid blocks, stairs, and water sources only.
This means no parkour, no ladders, no slab exploits, no fence exploits, no water currents, no fence doors, no trapdoors, and no redstone-powered doors.
Your builds CANNOT contain glass
A zombie (and every other mob) should be able to see you through glass as clear as air, but can't (Mojang). Use fences instead, since they will obstruct your vision almost as much as it does the zombies.
Barricades around your builds must be made out of wooden doors
You can imagine this as basically a wooden fence around your farm or house. This serves as a fear-factor, an alarm, and something to maintain after every night.
Light sources cannot be placed beyond your barricades
This includes when mining; barricades must be within reason distance of each other.
Can we make the Infectedeven scarier?
People will have different canons of what a zombie can and cannot do, and these can be translated into pseudo-difficulty settings.
Make another command system close to your first, according to the zombie ‘type’ you prefer:
The Walking Dead
Slow and dumb. This is basically what the default Infected is, so don’t add anything.
7 Days to Die
The Infected are slow during the day, but sprint after you at night, making them almost impossible to escape on flat ground.
Place down a Daylight Sensor, and attach it via four redstone dust to a hopper clock. Connect this clock to an impulse command block: /effect give @e[type=zombie] speed 2 1 true
Left 4 Dead (minus Special Infected; immune)
The Infected will always sprint, regardless of time of day.
Make a hopper clock connected to an impulse command block: /effect give @e[type=zombie] speed 2 1 true
28 Weeks Later/Train to Busan (not immune)
The most terrifying version: The Infected will always sprint, and will kill instantly due to their insidious infection. Armor will NOT save you.
Make a hopper clock connected to one impulse and one chain command block: /effect give @e[type=zombie] speed 2 1 true /effect give @e[type=zombie] strength 2 9 true
Class 4 Outbreak
The Infected have taken over the world: They are everywhere, and will quickly gather into hordes if you don’t run and hide. This can be combined with the zombie types above.
Enter these commands yourself: /time set midnight /gamerule doDaylightCycle false
Download Alternative
I can promise you that the effort in setting up is worth the challenge, and the diversity of your own world.
Even so, I have a map that people can download instead, which is set to have the 7 Days to Die version of the Infected.
The setting can easily be changed by adding or removing the respective components via Creative mode.

In the first command block, copy and paste this command:
/data merge entity @e[type=zombie,limit=1,name="Zombie"] {CanBreakDoors:1b,CustomName:"{\"text\":\"Infected\",\"color\":\"red\",\"bold\":true}",ArmorItems:[{},{},{},{id:"minecraft:dark_oak_pressure_plate",Count:1b}],Attributes:[{Name:generic.followRange,Base:120}]}
This will make your zombies become labelled as Infected, allow them to break doors, and prevent them from burning during the day.
But most importantly, if you can see an infected, they can see you.
Non-persistent mobs will despawn when far away enough.
Hence, in the following chain of command blocks, paste one line of code for each:
/tp @e[type=skeleton] ~ -200 ~
/tp @e[type=spider] ~ -200 ~
/tp @e[type=cave_spider] ~ -200 ~
/tp @e[type=witch] ~ -200 ~
/tp @e[type=creeper] ~ -200 ~
/tp @e[type=enderman] ~ -200 ~
/tp @e[type=stray] ~ -200 ~
/tp @e[type=phantom] ~ -200 ~
/tp @e[type=silverfish] ~ -200 ~

Roaming for a server; come knocking at my door if you want
Nice write-up. Z. Apocalypses never felt more like other media.
Just a couple thoughts, Shaun of the Dead, and World War Z (the BOOK version, Not movie). For other settings /situations.
