Another tip: Don't dig forward and walk in the direction in which you're digging simultaneously. And don't mine with your feet level any lower than y = 11.
It just grabs your last level.dat file and uses that to continue playing so it doesnt have to mod anything. If you really don't want to use mods or cheats MCSave a much better way than reloading your game tons of time.

Download MCSave! Tired of losing an inventory full of diamonds to treacherous lava? MCSave is a lightweight program that automatically saves snapshots of your Minecraft Save files as you play. Instantly reset to previous points in your game.
This method doesnt require you to carry water or fire resistant equipment at all. And if you could save your loads of diamonds rather than moving on id say its worth a try.
However some of us actually want to survive lava without cheating.

fire resistant potion is the easiest and the most effective along with not digging straight down. I rarely carry a bucket of water with me. If i end up dying then i end up dying and i take it as part of the game and it adds to the challenge of it. .

I have no comment for the fact that a moderator necro'd a post.
As far as "Don't dig forward and walk in the direction in which you're digging simultaneously" goes, this is why you sneak; I do it out of habit anytime I mine anything, even if it clearly isn't necessary. I also disagree about not mining below layer 11 as lava flows slowly enough that you can easily avoid it (plus my modded worlds have an extremely rare ore - 3 times rarer than Netherite on any one layer - which is most common just above bedrock, designed to make players do exactly what is commonly considered to be extremely dangerous and unsafe - but caves/lava do not occur everywhere so you can simply avoid those regions).
Otherwise, it surprises me how often people run through lava-filled caves without bothering to use a water bucket to cover exposed lava - this is especially important when you are exploring cave systems like this (common prior to 1.7; I've even found cave systems with sunlight reaching down to lava level, not due to a ravine), and the cost of a few extra torches to light up the floor is more than offset by the risk reduction and abundance of wood and coal (a stack of logs makes 2,048 torches, close to what I use over two play sessions, which are limited by how much resources I can carry, which includes more than 4,000 coal ore mined over those two sessions).

I actually carry a Potion of Fire Resistance in my inventory at all times on my server for emergencies.
I keep the entire top row of my inventory full of what I consider to be essential items. The order shifts around as I play, but the top row is always nice and neatly full of the following:
1. Chest armor, which I alternate equipping with my Elytra.
2. Ender chest.
3. Crafting table.
4. My "Gogo Box" shulker, which contains basic tools, maps, food, wood, iron, anvil, backup items, etc.
5. Bed.
6. Ender Pearls.
7. Torches.
8. Empty "Sack o' Stuff" shulker for loot.
9. Potion of Fire Resistance.
Whenever I switch to equip one of these in my hotbar, I replace it with my rockets, or whatever other happened to be in my hotbar. When I fly through the Nether, I put the Potion of Fire Resistance in my hotbar. It has saved me more than once, I recommend everyone do this.
Wow. 9 years later, and this post saved me. I was about to fight the Ender Dragon, so I was fully equipped with enchanted netherite armour with enchanted weapons. I was just getting some nether wart for potion when a ghast attacked me and blew me off a ledge, straight into a lava lake. I kept my cool enough to save the game, then searched up what to do. The water bucket was off since I was in the Nether, but I did have a golden apple which helped a lot. I sank to the bottom, built my way back to the surface, then frantically swam to shore. You saved me from much grief, thank you so much (also I’m a noob as well, I’ve been playing minecraft for years now, and this is my first legitimate attempt to defeat the dragon).

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
