So me and my husband have a question which we cant seem to find a clear answer on.
We have a world where we have been working on the last 3 years but we would like to start a new world now.
Only "problem" is the new update thats coming up. Since it has new types of structures etc, we were wondering if its okay to already start a new world and just stay very close to spawn, so that when the update comes, and we go explore more, the new types of structures will generate in the parts we have never been to.
Or doesnt it work that way? Is it more that when you start a brand new world, everything is already generated and mapped out?
Since we have been playing with the same world for so long we dont know how or if that happened in our old world.
Personally, I'm waiting for the new 1.13 release, but in the meantime I'm goofing around in the latest snapshot just to get myself familiar with the new features. So I'm creating new temporary worlds, but I don't intend to keep any of them once the new release comes out.
There will be significant changes to world generation, so I would wait. I tried my current seed in the snapshots, and while major features were similar, things like caves and structures, and even my world spawn location were very different. Even if you stay near spawn to allow for new things to generate when you explore outward after the update drops, you could run into problems, like eyes of ender, maps or compasses not working correctly, or structures not generating properly.
I would recommend staying with your old world a little longer and waiting for the 1.13 release. Find another project you can work on in your world to pass the time and keep it interesting.
Or, you could start a temporary world in the snapshots, and then start over again after the full 1.13 release.
I tried my current seed in the snapshots, and while major features were similar, things like caves and structures, and even my world spawn location were very different.
I made a copy of my world and flew around in it in 1.13 snapshots. The new chunks appeared seamless. I'm not worried about chunk border edges and will migrate to 1.13 when OptiFine for it is released.
Pistons losing their ability to hide light sources in cobblestone/stone/stone bricks, though, that's going to suck. We need more lighting options, not less.

My short story-like journals; quick-and-easy reads:
My wife and I are playing a Snapshot server. I watch the bug reports and make note of anything "odd" so I don't ruin our current map. You CAN NOT do this on a Realms server, but if you are only playing LAN you should be able to play Snapshot *IF* you are careful to make backups. Just this week we updated, but found books, villagers, even bows changed their enchants to "Protection". We went back to 18w22a and the backup I made just before the update.
We are having fun and happy. If you plan to start a new map AND you are playing Realms, I would suggest you just wait. If you are playing LAN or controlling a server NOT on Realms, you can likely play the Snapshot, just be careful with what you are doing. If you've questions, I'd be glad to help. But backups are super critical when testing Snapshots.
We plan to use the map we are currently enjoying into the 1.13 release.
I think its kinda sad to have a world of that age and just start a new one because of updates; why not stay in your world and move to a new unexplored area once the update is released? Unless being close to spawn is essential for you, keeping your old world will mean you will have plenty of resources to hand and in time you could establish a rail/nether link back to the original area if you wanted.
My wife and the others on our server enjoy having a fresh slate and a "clean" new area to start in. We enjoy the challenge that comes with a map wipe. There's that, and old redstone stuff breaks, new blocks we would have built with had they been available when we built stuff, and so on. A really cool aspect of Minecraft is how you can keep your old maps, or change for something entirely new as it suits you.
We thought this one was fixed, but Lapis and Nether Quartz still seem stingy. Lapis and quartz generation is different from other ore spawning. So the *current* map we are enjoying where everything seems fine means that *if* there is a fix to Lapis and Nether Quartz, we'll have to either a- do a map wipe after already investing a huge amount of time in this since we thought MC-126373 was fixed, or b- live with it until we hit unexplored areas. "Editing" the world is not an option.
-- MCEdit 2 Beta Sep 10, 2016 <-- Nope, 1.13 is a significant change.
-- MCEdit Unified 1.5.6.0 1/23/2017 <-- Nope, same issue.
These critical tools for "dropping" chunks, causing them to regenerate might be ready "soon", but not likely stable before we are ready to get on with playing. We could also just delete the region files outside of chunks we are playing in, but I'll have to figure out which ones those are and hope I'm avoiding anything we've already worked in.
Or we could map-wipe or just live with it.
Welcome to life on the bleeding edge. But we knew the risks and embraced them as a very small group of friends and family. We'll likely just live with it as it is and move forward. We can consider the "stingy" Lapis and Nether Quartz as part of the challenge.
YOU DON'T HAVE TO! Just hang tough and wait for the 1.13 release. *WE* (many many players) who are beating ourselves silly running Snapshots are trying to figure all this out so you won't have to be in agony when you *do* upgrade. If you are not sure... just wait. You'll have a better game for it.
Or accept and embrace the challenges of life on the Bleeding Edge. It might give you hairy palms while trudging through bug reports and learning the technical side of Minecraft, but the more eyeballs on stuff like this, the more likely we can get this stuff fixed before release. The choice is yours.
EDIT: No sunglasses emoji! I meant "B" next point! Gah!

For some reason I couldnt reply to you, so I'll just quote you!:
We arent starting a new world just because of the updates, we just thought awhile ago that it might be fun to start from scratch again but when we looked online since months we saw that an update was coming and we started asking ourselfs this question. Our old world will still be our main world in my opinion cause we did everything in there, and obviously worked very hard on it.
It is however, eventhough we have so much resoures, that new biomes, structures etc is so far away from our spawn. I started a new map today to walk around in and biome changes are soooo much more frequent and also villages are everywhere now it seems. Our old world makes us travel at least 3000 blocks from spawn to get into a new area, and while we have a really nice nether system, its still pretty far away.
But we decided to open a new world and just farm resources very close to spawn, our new map hasnt got larger bodies of water near by so that stays unexplored for now.

Yeah I know, it really sucks, new maps nowadays have so much less ocean to begin with, that really stood out for me. Like I said this world is 3+ years old, maybe even close to 4. I hate it though cause our old world is so good and so much time went in there.
AMIDST and Mineatlas.com,various other tools will let you find a seed with lots of ocean. Ocean generation was changed way back because of complaints about rediculous endless oceans players had to deal with. You could keep your world, wait for MCEdit, then agree to chop off any chunks further from spawn than a 1 or 2km distance. You could even just delete region files beyond a certain range by hand. But any solution comes with its own problems, and sometimes all options suck. 😔
I'm not looking for a seed with lots of ocean perse, I just noticed that our old world seed has so much ocean if compared to the newer seeds we have tried. But you said that they changed that after complaints so that makes sense.
It is possible to use AMIDST to search for seeds with certain specific qualifications. There are message threads discussing how Tango Tek found a list of candidate seeds for Hermitcraft 5. If you are inclined to look for a seed with specific qualifications, you can get help to do that here.
Keep in mind "random numbers can be really REALLY random." AMIDST can look at all the random seeds and come back to you with a short list of something suitable, if you are considering that route. Keeping the same seed is ok too, just be VERY certain of how you want to go about it and what liabilities you are willing to accept with that path. Good luck!
I think its kinda sad to have a world of that age and just start a new one because of updates; why not stay in your world and move to a new unexplored area once the update is released?
I agree wholeheartedly. Shockingly, you don't even use elytra. With rocket-powered elytra, even 25 km is just a quick jaunt.
It's too bad people think of starting a new world as a "fresh start" and instead of what it really is: "erasing history."
One can easily have the experience of a "fresh start" simply by traveling far away. Take a half stack of potatoes and keep walking until they run out. Toss anything you brought. There. Fresh start. I know it's that easy because I've done it more than once in my vanilla, large-biome SSP world began July 2, 2014 in version 1.7.10.
My next "fresh start" will happen after 1.13 is released. I'll fly some 50-100 km away, put all my stuff in a shulker box and stuff it in an ender chest, then either break the chest or just not open it. I'll make a nice outpost and branch mine, explore the surroundings both above and below. I plan to seek out the nearest End portal and slay the dragon (again) before allowing myself to return back to Midgard. If I die, I'll just fly back and continue—with rocket-powered elytra, it's no big deal. I'd enjoy the short homecoming visit anyway.

Give it a try, but if you've been with the world for three or four years, I expect and hope you'll experience a bit of Minecraft homesickness and return after the new wears off of the new world.
After an extended time away playing hardcore worlds to spice up my interest in Minecraft, I know I'm glad to come "home" to Midgard Castle.

Great! That's wonderful! It's good to have a reason to travel far from spawn or your main base, especially now with rocket-powered elytra. It drives infrastructure improvements. If you enjoy making roads and railways, it's the greatest reason to do so. Instead of making the same amount of new infrastructure in a different world, just extend what already exists. In my opinion, "Look at our 10 km railway," is much more impressive than, "Look at our 5 km railway in our new world."

World generation changes you mention, especially the loss of large oceans, all happened in 1.7, as far as I know (cue TheMasterCaver). Unless your world is more like five years old, then there have not been profound changes to world generation.

A man's gotta do what a man's gotta do, and I'm gonna do what my wife tells me to. Usually, it would begin with her feeling overwhelmed by the existing world. "Too much stuff!" Then she starts playing single player, and asks me to play with her. Then I ask her about the server we are paying for, and she gets mad and doesn't want to talk about it. I put her single-player world on the new server, then she's happy for a while and we get to play together with our friends.
I'm glad in Minecraft there is a great deal of room for personal tastes and for people to have different approaches to the game and what they want out of it.

Me too, Brother. Me too. That's the exact reason I consider it the #1 greatest video game ever made. I'm 37; I know children of an age measured with single digits who love this game, and at the same time, people who post on here regularly who are fully a generation older than I. That's flat-out amazing.
By all means, play the game however in the world you enjoy playing it!

I would definitely start over if I had that much ocean explored. This new update makes the oceans come alive. You would not want miles of dead ocean.
