I've seen a few videos of ethoslab, or bdoubleo100 where they open F3, and can tell how many mobs there are roughly in their trap, or how well its running. but, im not really sure what they're looking at, they open it up and just say "Yeah, looks like we've got about 70 here" etc.
Each mob has a tag, which was shown in previous versions. You can tell how many mobs there are by counting the number of tags. This has been removed in 1.8, or around that time.

This was compensated by adding in the entity data values. It's symbolized by 'E:' in the upper left corner of the F3 menu. Entities also includes items and mobs that are even further away, so you can only get a rough estimate.
The third row marked E: show you the number of rendered entities over the number of entities in the world. It doesn't show you an exact number of mobs, but it's usually a good indication. And if you are able to remove all other entities, it can show a number that are close enough. Do multiple tests to get better results.
Anyway, what is the use of counting mobs?Unless I have a chart that tells me how much XP I can get from that specific mob amount. Thanks for the info anyways. It might be put to good use in the future or in the present if the is actually a use to count the amount of mobs in a mob trap, especially a mob-drop trap.

I know you posted about a year ago but it may be of use now. You can use it to find caves and locate mobs because there is usually more entities in the caves direction
How do they tell? is it possible?
