Hey everyone,
I dug a 3*3*350 (And ongoing) mine at floor level 10. I found 0!!!! diamonds in the actual mine and only found 3 in a cave system the mine uncovered. Is this abnormal? Should I keep mining? This was generated before the Halloween Update and I am mining in an area generated before the Halloween Update. Does that have any effect on diamond frequency?
I found a better way to mine then Click Mining. Heres how:
1. Mine 1 block normally.
2. Open your inventory while you are still holding left mouse.
3. Continue Mining, now you have to wasted time. You also dont have the pick swinging animation.
I call this MitchyMonster Mining. As far as I know no one else has discovered this /cocky

Double FPS? hurray!
Now i can run Minecraft with 6 FPS!!
Incorrect. There is no gain using this method of mining.
While the animation is linked to the glitch, it is not the cause of it. I have tested this myself, and can conclude it does not work. The only time it ever worked was on indev, or perhaps infdev, but never in alpha, and definitely not in beta.
If you wish to disagree, video evidence must be provided, in a light area. Who knows, perhaps it might change from different versions of java.
the only thing I do differently though is I make my branches 3 high instead of 2 and I dig 2 and more recently 3 layers of shafts separated by 1 layer and each lower shaft is centered below the two shafts above it.
I do this to CLEAR all resources, not so much just for diamond mining (I play an SMP server and we have no tool durability). Also since other people are building/mining near me I can't just expand infinitely like I can in single player.
I dig right at the lava layer so I never walk forward too fast and I was using a lot of lava for obsidian so I cleared the lava lakes under my castle... if I don't have a use for it though I just leave it and I won't dig the lowest layer of shafts there, just the upper two. I also tend to go maybe 5 torches spaced 5 blocks apart each.. so 25-30 blocks before turning around and digging the next shaft home.
like I said I do this for clearing resources and making sure I got everything before I use TNT and clear the stone (I have a rather large open pit under my castle, from surface to bedrock... I only properly clear the diamond layer though, the rest I just blast).
I go spelunking for fun though... I love exploring caves even though I can get more resources with less risk just branch mining. It's just way more exciting going out into the wilderness, finding a cave entrance and following it as far as it goes :biggrin.gif: I try to always head down though unless I can see iron in the distance or I'm worrired about a mob jumping on my head... then I'll clear a cave above me quickly and then keep heading downwards. U re absolutely right though about fast clearing!.. gogin slow in caves makes them more dangerous.. if you just dead-run and spam torches, you can get quite deep in them before ever running into a mob.

On a two high branch mine, this is 8 revealed for every two blocks mined. Hence, you have an efficiency of four.
However, a three high branch mine reveals 11. (one roof, one floor, three front, six sides). Considering you mined three blocks to reveal 11, you now have an efficiency of 3.66. You aren't revealing as many faces as possible.
Another thing to remember is you will now spend 33% more time in a single area. Given that only 1 vein of diamond will be generated per chunk, you are now spending 33% more time on every chunk, decreasing the amount of chunks you can cover in the same time from than by branch mining two high, thus lowering your diamond count.
I must say, I love your guide! I went from finding no diamonds, finding some every 15 minutes within a week! I definitely give you A for making this guide!

Why fear death? Death does not fear you. Death, is nothing, Life is nothing, it is how you make use of both, that truely makes them, "Something".
I like it, I've been playing for a while but this is definitely the best guide for beginners (if they wanna be a miner)

I do not think there is any thrill that can go through the human heart like that felt by the inventor as he sees some creation of the brain unfolding to success....Such emotions make a man forget food, sleep, friends, love, everything.
This is a great idea! It is very efficient as well... I've got 32 diamonds from this trick!
Wow... how far back into the forums did you go?

The Elites of Minecraft thread contains a tidbit that has doubled my mining output.
The SW quadrant has almost double the ore-per-deposit of the NW quadrant of the map. This means not only more ore is gained per vein but a grid system is MUCH less likely to miss any ore.
Edit:Also in mp I really feel for the saps mining in the NE. I see them cheer about their first 2 diamonds while I already have 20ish in the first hour of mining.
Is this bit of info still true with the current game version?
Wow the trolling on you is endless. Maybe their jealous. Cause I've done the straight down tunnel thing but this is even better. Nicely said. Hopefully I add more constructive comments. I'd have a crafting table nearby all the branches. Stone picks if you have to. Stone picks are efficient as they come. Or diamond picks or iron picks if you like them. And a chest cause I stash diamond as soon as I touch it. But I totally love diamond swords... hundreds. Hey I'll make hoes out of diamond... now that I've got this handy guide. Also as much as it's a necro. A lot of people have referenced it recently. I say long live the post. It's better than the stuff I've done. This is actual community valuable stuff.
From my experience, spelunking is the most efficient method of obtaining all ores except for Diamond and Emerald (Which is more efficiently obtained from villagers anyway). The most efficient way of getting Diamonds, I find, is to literally dig a 2x1 tunnel to infinity, at the level where the big lava lakes will be directly at your feet.
This is, of course, less efficient when your tunnel approaches 4 to 8km long, in which case you should either dig in a new direction from your base, or invest in a railway system. What makes this more efficient than a branch mine? Not only will you not get lost (You literally only have two directions, back and forth), but you can kill two birds with one stone and use the tunnel for transport between outposts.

A simple suggestion on geology here.
