So, I started a new Minecraft world and have developed it nicely. Everything is going fine until I get my obsidian and it's time to go into the Nether. I set it up near my spawn on the edge of a river, maybe 1-3 blocks above water level, I don't precisely remember. When I go through, I'm underground, so I start trying to tunnel up to open air so I can look around the Nether, but every time I do I tunnel up into lava. After spending a good amount of time tunneling all over the place, and lava being above me everywhere, I conclude that I've actually come out underneath the sea of lava. I'm actually not even very far from the Nether bedrock. I don't really understand how this happened; the portal isn't underground or anything, it's above sea level.
I've made a few attempts at lava engineering but haven't gotten anything to work. I'm not well versed on all the specific properties of every object, and mostly just worked with trying to shape the netherrack. I'd need some way that would allow open movement up and down through the lava, rather than just moving myself above it to escape.
My second idea was to move the portal itself, but it's been stubborn. I tried moving the entry portal up higher, but it links back to the same portal in the nether. I then tried moving it even higher and further away. I'm not sure specifically how far the distance is other than it was across an extreme hills biome next to my spawn where the original portal was set up. This also led to the underground nether portal, but when I exited back through, it spawned a new portal underground in the overworld, close to where the original portal had been, but much deeper.. I tore that one down, and the new one, and set one up even further away, at the edge of a map that I'd expanded four times that had home base, and the original portal, effectively at the center. This also led to the same nether portal, and when I went back to the overworld, this time the exit portal was up on a hill close to where the original portal had been. I tore down the one that was far away, stashed all my stuff and went into the nether with just a diamond pickaxe, tore down the Nether portal, died, respawned, tore down the overworld portals, so there were no more portals. I created another one, up on a hill, and it took me back to the same place; the nether portal was just where it was before, one set one block deeper in the ground.
I don't exactly understand how Nether portals work, but this all seems very strange. How can I break away from this and set up a Nether portal that isn't under the sea of lava? Is it possible? Do I need to go even further away? The distance is starting to become unfeasible. Is there some way to get through the lava into the open air of the Nether? I just need something, anything, to get me access to the Nether at large, which so far, I've been unable to do. Is this sort of portal behavior normal? And how can I find a solution to this problem?
yeah id kwhy exactly it does this u just got a bad spawn there :-/ ur best option is just to keep tunneling till (if ever) u find the "Real" nether...... i have also been spawned into this cave type thing as well and i have foud a way out (sometimes)
Does it have to be 1000 blocks from where the original that created the Nether portal is, or where the closest/most recent connection to that portal is? The fact that even with all the portals gone, it still goes back to the same place seems to imply that there's some kind of permanant connection. It's quite a problem because it means that any trips I take to the Nether will have to be long distance trips, which sort of defeats the purpose of using it for fast travel in the first place. Is there no way to completely wipe out the connection to the Nether? To sort of "reset" anything that's making the portal occur where it is? I'm still confused on why different Overworld entry points created different exit points. I'd think it would just take you back to the one you used to get in.
One block in the Nether is 8 blocks in the Overworld. First you write down the correndents of your house or where you want to exit at. You place your new overworld Portal over 1,000 blocks from where the first Portal used to be. Then go into the Nether, take down the Nerther's side of the portal and deivde the house's corrds in X and Z by 8. Head to that spot where you want to be and place the portal. Then go through and hope for the best.
I would suggest a fire potion, but you can't really get the ingredients, can you?
How the heck can He make a fire resistant potion if that's the first time he was in the Nether and haven't found a fortress and under a lava ocean in that world?
2.) Fill the tunnel that you spawned in that's around your portal
3.) Punch out 1 obsidian that's on your portal.
4.) Die
5.) Respawn.
6.) Go back into nether
7.) ...
8.) Profit!
Basically Destroy the portal that's in the nether and die, be sure to fill the tunnel that it spawned in though, otherwise it will make another right beside the old one.

So far my solution is kind of irritating but seems like a start. I crossed an ocean and set up another portal. It takes several minutes in a straight line to get there, but, I wanted to be absolutely sure I was far enough away. I haven't explored through it too much yet, but it seems like it's above the lava sea. I suppose I could try to reposition the Nether side portal, but counting out blocks to find where that is sounds incredibly tedious, unless there's a game function to give me my coords that I've just never used.
If I can get the ingredients for a fire potion, maybe I could make the original portal work, though it'd still be a pain and take a lot of potions depending upon how long they last. I originally tried to "burrow" upwards through the lava by tearing a big hole in the bottom of the lava sea. I had assumed that if the hole were big enough, it would leave a hole in the lava and I could build a spiral stair going upwards. I only managed to make a horizontal tunnel through the lava that I'd flooded the underground chamber with; there was no hole in the lava sea, so, I assume there must be source blocks all over. But if I were immune to lava, I guess I could try to do it.
Either way, the solution isn't perfect now, but, it's tolerable at least. I suppose it's just the nature of the portals that we have to work with.
Whenever you set up a portal, the game checks an appropriate place to place a Nether Portal. Preferrably it should be one of the high 'islands' or better, NEAR the lava sea where you get this lovely big 'continent'. Anyway, where you set up the portal, it couldn't find anywhere to make it, really. The game, as a last resort checks out the sub-lava caverns and they have one. That's why you have such a frustrating Portal location.
Better just break through the layer using some tactics.... it's hard but sometimes it's possible. And sometimes you could dig up.... into a nice continent. Find one. Just check where the ceiling doesn't drop lava droplets. Wish you luck!

That's the joke.
You're in a real tough spot, if you are willing too you can use Mcedit and make another portal above, then deactivate the one under the lava sea and move yourself to the other one.
I broke the portal, died, then took the portal again. It made another portal RIGHT NEXT TO THE LAST ONE.
How high up is your portal in the Overworld?
If you try that again but put your Overworld portal up around Y = 100 you'd have a better chance of getting a portal above the lava.
Or build your Overworld portal a couple of hundred blocks away, once you have a usable portal in the Nether you can go to the X and Z coordinates of your original Nether portal and build a portal that will connect with your original Overworld portal.
All of the above presumes that you have destroyed the Nether portal under the lava.
If you want another chance without having to kill yourself you need to go more than 1024 blocks away from your original Overworld portal and build a new portal, best make it 1200 blocks away to be on the safe side.
Then you can make your way back to the X and Z coordinates of your original Nether portal and build a portal that will connect with your original Overworld portal and then either drop gravel so you can get down to the original and break it or build a new Overworld portal at the same height as the new Nether portal.
If you got a large lava ocean at 0,0 in Nether, this will be the result. One thought: lava level in Nether is 30. So taking into accont distance from floor to bedrock, cave height, ceiling, lava depth is not that great. One option is to push the ceiling up with pistons till you break to surface. If ceiling is too thick(over 12 blocks) you might need to dig it out a bit.

Had this problem solved it easily.
1. Broke portal in nether and died.
2. Went far away in overworld and made new nether portal.
3. Went to nether location near as possible to converted cordinants.
4. built portal there in nether and stepped through.
Problem solved!!
In my case, I had to tunnel up into the nether ceiling to get to correct location but converted that into a nice nether base.
