I've been wandering through the End for about an hour trying to find an end city, is there any trick to finding them, so far I've just been heading in a random direction, hopping from island to island hoping I get lucky, is there any better way?

Ha, took me a lot longer than an hour, with only one end-portal.
Might want to kill the dragon another 19 times and get more end portals?
Anyhow, I made maps as I went along, so I could see what was close enough to bridge quickly and so on.
Crank up your render distance and look around. If your system is too slow to play with high render distance, just crank it up while you are stationary to search the area nearby.
And as TheWesson said above, map your progress (or at least mark it) to avoid going in circles, and kill the dragon again to get more gateway portals (up to the maximum of 20). Here's a 3x3 grid of 8:1 maps I have completed. Lots of end cities in that area (purple). Click for full sized picture.

Nice. I use 16:1 maps myself, here's my grid:
Carry a map in your off hand, it helps a LOT in making sure you're not retracing the same steps over and over again. Or just drop torches along the edges of the islands you explore, so when you see them across a gulf of void later, you can tell if this is an unexplored or an already-explored island at a distance. Either way, bring a crapload of food, and at least a stack or two of logs and several stacks of coal/charcoal for making torches.
Once you've got an Elytra and some rockets, you can fill in the blank parts of the maps VERY quickly, but be sure to a) stay at fairly high altitude, and make sure you don't lose track of your orientation and end up unknowingly spiraling down into the void. Also try to avoid looking at any endermen as you come in for a landing.

End cities are generated in lines east to west. Typically to get my first elytra I bridge due north or south until I hit a city. Doesn't usually take very long at all.
And because of that generation, rockets and multiple elytras I now have two shulkers full of them hahah. I collect elytras just for the sake of it.

No tricks, but if you wish to cheat you can use the /locate command.
The program Admist can map out worlds, and will show end cities.
No link as I am on my iPad and editing on this thing is a pain in the rear end.
