I've raided a few Woodland Mansions on my server and my fellow players (one in particular) have raided a boatload as well. Getting to the next one is continually more difficult due to how far away they are. I'm wondering if anyone has any tips and tricks for finding them. I'll be taking a noob friend on my next raid to show him around some of the explorable stuff in the world. So I'd like my next trip to be a little less haphazard.
Currently, my general plan is to figure out the direction I need to go based on the new map that I buy. This is obviously either east or west and either north or south. Once I know, I head to the nether roof above the bedrock, I strap on my Elytra and fly in that particular direction diagonally for quite a long time. I then build a nether portal, pop out to the over world, and check the map. Then I'll make a decision, which is generally one of three things.
1) Do the time consuming process of reentering the nether, climbing to the top, glitching through the bedrock with a mine cart, rail, and ender pearl, and continue.
2) Go back to the nether, but try to travel the nether on the ground, which doesn't require much startup cost, but can be a pain in the neck if I'm going to travel far.
3) Continue travel on in the over world.
I almost always choose 3 if I've gone past my destination in either the X or the Z direction on my last trip in the nether. If I haven't, I usually go with 2. As for how far I travel in the nether, it's hard to know. I know that I need to travel at least as far from world spawn as the most recently raided Woodland Mansion. Other than that, how much further to go is just guess work on my part and dependent on my mood.
I'd love some kind of calculation or rule of thumb based on previous coordinates for how far the next one is likely to be. Does anyone have any other suggestions for travel other than the three basic ways I've laid out?
For reference, my previous woodland mansion was located at -39052,71,41636 (over world coords). If you want to put concrete numbers on the suggestions of how far to travel, go ahead and use though.

This 1st time exploring the Woodland Mansion was super great !! seeing the new mobs and especially those HUGE wool heads of mobs.. was very cool for me...
I only play vanilla survival mc (just optifine graphics, and bdcraft texture), so it took FOREVER to get there. I never thought about using the nether above bedrock to decrease travel distance/time... that 's ingenuity :)!
The fun was fun, but in vanilla survival, the time and distance, for the loot and xp offered...just don't seem to be worth it for me, but it's still fun
And yeah.. lol, I ended up just using the TotU as just a tiki wall art ... lol

Yeah it's getting to be not worth it for me as well. We've raided dozens in total among everyone on the server and they're getting to be too far away. But I really want to take my friend to see one. Plus I do like exploring and traveling distances on occasion. Sometimes my character needs a vacation from the hard work he's doing building up the industrial district. My main reason, however, for going is that I like to decorate my mansion with rare treasures and the Totem of Undying is a great one to hang on your wall en mass to look like some kind of wealth collector of rare items for exotic, far-off places... which is exactly what they are. My hallway is covered in dragon heads as well. I've still yet to get mob heads, which are just about the hardest to get item, but I'll get there.
I'm the same way. In fact, I describe my play style as "distant adventurer."
I collect different mementos and souvenirs at my main base as well.
The potted jungle sapling is from my horseback ride to the jungle at 7667, 20,047 in my large-biome world, began July 2, 2014. Of course, that's only a 15-minute flight now with elytra, but that's a long, long way on horseback across the overworld! The tools are all the first of their kind to have ran out of durability and can't be enchanted or repaired any more (all in 1.8.x, way before Mending). There's a Nether Star above the nearest suit of iron armor, all of which is drops or from chests and some of which is god-tier for iron. The gray banner I already mentioned. The green banner is my first custom one ever; I copied its design form the Internet for my shield since I have the skin of an orc. The four maps are my first ever, though now I have more than a 4x4 area mapped, all fully zoomed out. And so on and so forth.

My short story-like journals; quick-and-easy reads:
I'd consider a mansion "just" 10,000 blocks away to be impractically far away to ever consider going to; I've never traveled more than 3,000 blocks in one direction from spawn in any world (I just recently finished a railway that is 7.74 km both ways), and usually no more than half that; as it is, the only thing I intentionally search for is a stronghold (the game conveniently makes this an easy task with Eyes of Ender), otherwise I just come across things as I explore the world by caving, or like recently, I found a village while looking for a place to build a new base (a place to store resources and restock on food/wood between caving trips).
This is also why I don't like the changes they made to biomes in 1.7; you either have to be lucky or use a seed to get all biomes within 1-2,000 blocks of spawn, and even with more or less random biome generation I've never found every biome in most of my worlds (it took over 100 real-time days of playtime on one world to find every biome in vanilla 1.6.4; I've never found every biome added in my mods across every single world combined, including a couple that were present since the first version).
It is worth noting that even with a 100% spawn rate (e.g. Customized set to Roofed Forest and no other biomes, even River) you'll only find one mansion per 80x80 chunk region, the size of the grid they use; for comparison, villages/temples/igloos/witch huts use a 32x32 chunk grid so they are 6.25 times more common before considering how common their biomes are or spawning requirements (similar to villages prior to 1.10 mansions only spawn if there is Roofed Forest within most of the area they cover, and unlike villages they cannot generate smaller to stay within their biome, so the failure rate is likely far higher than the ~1/3 villages had).
Agreed. If I was going to allow "this is impractical" to affect my decisions in Minecraft, we wouldn't have a 256 block tower drop ride that looks like a rainbow as you fall, we wouldn't have that parrot dancing hall, and... I wouldn't play Minecraft.

Thanks a bunch.
I can't get worked up enough to do more than the two I've raided, but for both, I just rocket boosted over there.
However, I don't use glitches, so I'm not the best one to answer.
If the TotU was more useful than a wall hanger, and if the Mansions were any sort of challenge at all like Ocean Monuments and End Cities—both of which are easy but nothing like Mansions—I'd have plundered several by now. The last one I looted, I went just for the plain, ugly, gray-and-white banner. I detailed it here: http://www.minecraftforum.net/forums/minecraft-java-edition/survival-mode/2847657-vanilla-ssp-journal-1-7-10-1-12-to-make-a-gold?comment=36

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
There's nothing practical about it. It's fun.
