I think that is a good idea, but maybe it would make more sense if Jeb implemented an "ages" system (as in Age of Empires, not 'I'm 5 years old and I know more then you'), and those modern blocks were in the last stage or close to it.
I kinda do, but you must think how isfluorescent made? Or concrete? There would need to be even more blocks added just to mkae that stuff.
Fluorescent: glass surrounded by redstone and iron, gives you 2
Concrete: Probably clay and bricks give you some.
And you've got a point, maybe there should be even more added.

I guess to counter that, what's the logic in having a stone furnace or a rustic looking piston mechanism in a world of concrete and florescent lights? Wouldn't those items have modernized also? Sure you can texture them to make them look more modern, but you can also make a torch look more modern also and retexture obsidian or endstone to look like concrete or even use the new quartz as a concrete. So my point is that the 'theme' of minecraft as visualized by the world and default textures is more rustic world with a blend of fantasy and machines.
With the addition of redstone lamps, I think it would make more sense to use a texture pack to turn those into flourescent lights. You can also re-texture another block to look like concrete. I've seen many texture packs that do so.

An Age system doesn't work with the established direction of Minecraft. Minecraft is ultimately a sandbox game. As such, adding in Ages would limit players in a way that they are not meant to be limited. Age mechanics turn every world into a challenge where the goal is to advance your "civilization." While such challenges are fun, often Minecraft players want to use all their wool on pixel art, not save it to advance to the "Modern Age." It might be fun in another game, but it's not the right fit for Minecraft.
No. It doesn't fit the base theme of minecraft. Those types of things should be left to mods.
I concur. I have a fear that they'll just keep adding and changing, adding and changing until the whole bit becomes diluted. Sort of like how Facebook works...
Concrete?
I think florescent lights are redundant (ahem, redstone lamps, ahem!)
a few decent looking blocks would be nice. mostly I would like dirt half slabs that grew grass. and yes i know thats already been attempted! but things have changed.
Have any of you seen the new Quartz blocks that Jeb posted in his twitter?
They look pretty modern, if you ask me...
Sure, they are only a test, and may never happen, but the truth is that they look very similar to Red Power's marble... and the same can be said about the new redstone gates...
That's awesome!! However, I imagine it's very hard to obtain, as just one block probably requires an entire vein on Nether Quartz.

Those would still exist. You would start out with rustic pistons, and as you got further in the game, you get more advanced modern blocks. Don't you think Minecraft's end point could be higher? By that I mean, once you get far enough in survival, the only blocks you really have to furnish your house are small in number, and you really only need one big room, which leads to pointless rooms that just look nice. Wouldn't it be better to eventually get better stuff? Stuff that's much harder to get, and also more modern?

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
Stupid 3D..
