Am I the first to realize this? Holy crap this is overpowered.
Since the armor system was revamped, it's become increasingly difficult to die. This turns PvP into essentially slap-fights, and whoever started the fight with less chestplate durability loses.
That is...
Unless Fire Aspect is involved.
Fire damage ignores armor. If you have fire aspect and iron armor, you could **** up someone in full-diamond.
And with gold swords, Fire Aspect is INCREDIBLY easy to get. In fact, with only 1 experience level, it's possible to enchant a golden sword and get Fire Aspect. You might as well try it one of these days. Gold is so easy to come by nowadays.
So... how should we deal with this? Accept our new golden-sword-wielding overlords or cry to Notch to have it nerfed?

If we nerf them, GameChap's Golden Sword of Justice will hold no more significance. I say accept our shiny new ass-kickers.

I wouldnt cry for a nerf just yet lol, enjoy it a bit. And while enjoying it lets all cry for more gear/crafts instead. Decor is the only thing lacking in my opinion. Limited room design options vs epic home/structure options.
It would only be really effective in PvP because mobs don't have armor as far as I'm aware. Flint and steel with a diamond sword would probably be better though. If your really low on diamonds I could see the use for it, but otherwise, I wouldn't use it.

Blah blah blah dragon egg, blah blah blah green +1 plus button.

It can also be used to express-cook mobs. If they die from fire damage they drop cooked meat. I guess this would save you the time of cooking raw porkchops.
Seeing as how gold is pretty much useless otherwise, you might as well use it to make a Fire Aspect sword.
Gold was always useful in some eccentric way :wink.gif: But I got a gold sword with FireAspect 2 and Sharpness 4 for a round 20 levels. Kinda OP in a way :wink.gif:
I'd assume that the fire resistance armour enchant will protect from this, right? (And the fire resistance potion, although trying to drink that in the heat of battle may be slightly impractical.)
So just have a couple Fire Resistance IV spread throughout your armour and you should be good to go :tongue.gif:.
(Although you may have to give up a couple protections, if you use the helmets for the water-based enchants and aren't able to get multiple enchants on the feet...)

I don't really think golden swords are overpowered, after all it's not THAT easy to get a golden sword with fire aspect.
First of you need to find the gold, this mean going kind of deep underground. Then you need at least 5 diamonds, the first 3 goes into crafting a diamond pickaxe to mine obsidian, the other two diamonds goes into the actual crafting of the enchantment table along with four blocks of obsidian and one book.
In addition to the book you need to craft the enchantment table you will need additional books to make bookshelves if you want to have an effective enchantment room. This requires quite a bit of reeds.
Then you need to spend time enchanting until you get the desired enchantment. For each failed attempt you need to go out killing stuff to build up more XP.
A full set of diamond armor and a diamond sword requires 29 diamonds if I'm not miscalculating.
This is quite expensive, but I'm not convinced that it's quicker and better to go for the enchanted golden sword route.
With a full set of diamond armor and a diamond sword you really only have two weaknesses, lava and PvP players wielding weapons with fire aspect.
With a golden sword with fire aspect you are still vulnerable to damage so you will need some kind of armor if you don't want to get killed by random creepers or a few quick hits from a diamond sword. So if you want diamond armor in addition to your enchanted sword you need 27 diamonds to make armor + 2 diamonds for the enchantment table + 3 diamonds for the pickaxe you need for mining obsidian to the enchantment table, this equals 32 diamonds in total.
Players that puts in the effort to enchant swords should get an advantage. Without having done the research I expect strip mining in combination of exploring underground lava lakes will get you the best non magical armor and weapon quicker than an enchanter that in addition to mining for diamonds needs to spend time above ground to farm and collect reeds, in addition to killing mobs.
Oh and don't forget that it also takes time to mine for gold, you will be quite lucky if you can get a fire aspect enchanted sword with only two gold ingots.

*lecture*
When he says it's easy, he's comparing it to other enchants. Getting the enchanting table is an implied task. Also he said you could get a fire aspect with only level 1 enchants on a gold sword. So no, you don't have to farm mobs.
Though you could always go try for fire protection on armor, its nearly always going to be more effort to make the fire protect armor than to make the fire aspect sword.

I'm pretty sure you can mine gold with an iron pickaxe so you don't have to get those 3 diamonds extra. And immediately after reading this thread I enchanted about 8 golden swords with level 1 enchantment and most of them surprisingly came out as fire aspect or verrrry high enchants. I creeped up behind a guy in a warzone in full diamond to test it out and it actually does work.
But yeah you would be screwed if they had a fire resist potion, I'm pretty sure since it penetrates armour it will ignore the fire protection but it might still absorb the fire aspect attacks.

Respond regardless.

Technically it wasn't my find.
I asked my friend why I had a chest full of fail-enchanted gold swords. He said "because I heard they were better at enchantments".
And then he lit my ass on fire.
Cucumber
Gold is even more plentiful now that zombie pigmen drop it. Renewable swordsource.
Respond regardless.

True survival server, and fun!
It specifically ignores armor.

Those 3 diamonds are to be able to mine the obsidian that you need to craft the enchantment table.
