when I traveled back I didn't exit at the portal, instead I found myself about 50'ish blocks away in the ocean (and no new exit portal). I guess I get a free bath every time I return from the nether...
No new portal either, so you just appeared floating in the water (or in midair above the water and fell in)? That's weird...certainly not the same problem everyone else seems to have where a new return portal is created some distance away from the one through which they entered the nether in the first place.

Yep, no new portal. I just "appear" in the ocean, same spot everytime. For reference my over world portal is at -31,-369, the nether portal is at 11, -42 (the game most have moved it to a "better" location as it should have been around -4,- 46) and when I exit the portal back to the over world I end up at 70, -340.

A guy recently was complaining that when he travelled through portals sometimes it would turn his facing which has never happened before. The portal can generate turned, but your facing always remained the same. So yeah something may be wonky with nether portals in 1.4. You should put up a bug report on the new bug tracker site.

Look for an existing report first and if you find one vote it up.
I used to go back and forth through 2 connected portals. Had no issues.
Then i made a house few hundred blocks away and made another portal there. Now if I enter any of the two portals in my world they both connected to a one new portal in the nether that is now different from my original portal in the nether.
And when i come back through from the nether to the normal world it made a new portal that is different area from both my houses in the middle of nowhere. So not really sure why this happened, this problem seems different than what i have read so far on the forums.
Maybe I will try to find the original portal i had in the nether and see if something bad happened to it that might be the cause of this problem.
It works fine if you manually place both portals. After you have teleported to the Nether once you have two portals.
Press F3 to find the location in the overworld where you want the portal.
If you want your portal at
x= 64
z = 128
then divide both numbers by 8 to get the coordinates for the Nether portal which will give you.
x =8
z =16
Destroy the portal in the nether and rebuild it at the correct location.
If the coordinates are lined up you can build portals close together and still travel to the correct portal. I have two portals in the Nether that are about 25 blocks apart but I still travel to the correct portal in the overworld.
Someone taught me this little trick a few weeks ago. Build the overworld portal where you want it. Make sure your coordinates in the overworld are divisible by 8. No decimal places. For example, if you place it at x=1040 by z=336 (y doesn't matter), that would be good because 1040/8=130 and 336/8=42. Light it but don't go through. Now go to x=130 by z=42 in the nether and make a portal there. Look at the direction you're standing (NSEW) on the first block you place (first block is just an example) and that's the direction you will be heading out of the other portal (all this is in the Wiki). Light it and go through. All should be well. If it creates one a bit off, just destroy it and you should still be good. Portals can by off by 8 blocks in the overworld. Now if x=130 by z=42 is above a lava lake, oh well, just build it over the lava.. but don't fall in. It's hot.
Hey, here's a funny thing that happened to me that connects to this subject:
I was passing through a nether portal, one I use pretty regularly to travel to and from my base in the nether realm, but I was eating some bread at the time. I think that might have had an effect, because I found myself landing in a completely unknown area of the nether, and was not able to find my way back before my inevitable death. I was underequipped at the time, as I usually go in with an ender chest and/or the means to build a portal back, so I invariably lost both my impressive loot/arsenal and my accumulated 41 xp points, which I really needed.
Was this a one-time fluke or is this likely to happen again?
I fixed this on my server by deleting the nether world folder. I destroied the false nether portal, and deleted the nether world folder. Then it was fixed.
Be aware of that everything that is in the nether is getting deleted(maybe).
If this doesn't work. Try deleting DIM-1 folder.
Remeber to restart your server after doing this.
If you are playing survival, you should go to %appdata% > Roaming\.minecraft\saves\New World. You should find your , DIM-1 folder there. Simply delete it, and enter your world again.
I've had the same thing as OP had happen. As mentioned, It popped me out in a cave 2 chunks over from where I started. Have heard that this is a way to make obsidian by mining out this new portal, and it will be recreated each time. To guarantee getting back to your home just do the math and build a portal in the nether in the right place.

You think magic isn't real? Consider this: for every person, there is a sentence -- a series of words -- which has the power to destroy them.

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
Stupid 3D..

Seriously, learn to read dates! This thread was last posted in TWO YEARS ago.
TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
