So lately I have started a new SSP world and i want to start a village there, I already have a theme in mind, but I have a problem.
I don't know which size for the village would be good to choose. I have read about villager breeding and I know how to set the houses up right.
Why I am asking this question is, because I have built a farely big village before and the villagers ignored most of the house and centered in almost only 2 houses. And I think the houses on the other end of the village didn't even affect the max. villager cap, because they were to far away from them.
So what would you say would be a good size to not have that, and get the best efficiency out of my village? Maybe anybody could link me to a post that goes into that topic? (I really become a caveman when it comes to surching right)
tl;dr Best size for a village, to have villagers see all the houses and have most efficient breeding.
Thank you in advance.
Edit: Also I would like to hear your opinions on which blocks go good with mycelium. My first thought was sandstone, what would you say?
Villagers can "sense" a door within sixteen blocks horizontally along both axes, and up to three blocks above or five blocks below them, measured from the block the door is on to the block the villager is standing on. So it's a 33 x 33 x 9 box, centered one block below where the villager is standing. (Alternatively, each door needs a villager within five blocks above and three blocks below, or within a box centered one block above where the door is placed.) The crowding issue is something I don't really understand very well, but the solution is to trap villagers into certain parts of the village so they can't escape; this prevents them from wandering away and letting the houses die off. This way, you can make the village as large as you want. Otherwise, they all tend to crowd into one corner and the only houses they will "see" will be those within sixteen blocks (or so, because the villagers move around you know.)
The zombies in the zombie seiges are just normal zombies (they'll die when the sun comes up). How they spawn is different -- afaik, the seige will spawn somewhere in the village, at any light level, and spawns in mid-air like a zombie spawner would, meaning it ignores surface types like slabs and glass. I've seen as many as 8 or 10 zombies at a time. The first time it happened I freaked out, thinking they had all glitched out of my zombie spawner.
What I think should work, and I plan on doing with my own village, is to get the population up to the numbers I want; put a selection of villager types where I want them (read: trap them in stalls, shops, etc.); fence and light the whole village up, of course; and then rip out every last door, and use fence gates and piston doors instead. My logic is that if there are no "doors" there is no "village" and therefore no seiges.
Alas, this means no village-associated iron golems (any spawned during breeding will be disconnected, I believe), but if the place is safe enough from natural spawns it shouldn't be an issue.
Zombies in Seiges ignore light levels and the 24-block minimum distance from the player, but other than that, behave absolutely normal (IE, they won't spawn on halfslabs or glowstone or anything like that, need a 2x1x1 minimum space, etc.).
I created a huge apartment building, only one building, where the main building had two floors and every 2nd block on the walls were doors, and the villagers bred enough to spawn 3 Golems. Which means 45 villagers at least.
How sure are you of this? Because I would really like to know if that is the case [...]
I'm not completely positive, I don't read the code or anything, but of the two or three seiges I saw in my single player world, that's exactly what it looked like: they seemed to spawn hovering above the ground, over my half slab (bottom half) walkways, and spill down all over the place. I could be wrong about what I thought I was seeing -- maybe they spawned on top of something I didn't think of and jumped down, or I misjudged what they were on top of from the 24+ block distance. As I said though, the first time it happened, my first reaction was that they had glitched out of my trap because they seemed to be walking in mid-air. I have just assumed since then that it was similiar to how a spawner makes zombies.
You had me thinking about the seiges IronMagus, so I did a little digging to see if anyone had more information.
First, from the wiki:
It is impossible to completely avoid zombie sieges. If every block within the radius of the village has a half slab on top if it, the zombies will often spawn inside blocks, even solid blocks if there are no transparent blocks nearby, then walk towards the villagers through the wall (Confirmed in 1.3.2.) Zombie sieges also do not follow the 24-block rule, meaning they can spawn just a few blocks from the player.
I have to say I was skeptical that sieges really happened until I had a pack of zombies spawn in a flatworld village that I had carefully modified so that there were no spawnable blocks inside the walls and was carefully lit up to boot. Even slimes didn't spawn in this village.
From the wiki discussion page:
I previously thought that this only happened when zombies naturally spawned in the village. I didn't realize that zombies will spawn just because the village exists. Because of this, I thought the "fact" that this can happen at any light level was just a myth. What is really true? HotdogPi Come to my page! 02:50, 4 July 2012 (UTC)
■With "/gamerule doMobSpawning false", zombies still spawned in the village. Confirmed to be a special event. HotdogPi Come to my page! 18:43, 15 September 2012 (UTC)
I don't know how accurate the wiki information is, and there's clearly room for testing, but I would say if any of these are correct, then the conditions are definitely different than normal zombies, and possibly very different from zombie spawners.
I was hoping to find some video testing on YouTube but apparently there's a custom map called Zombie Seige -- that was all that came up.

You think magic isn't real? Consider this: for every person, there is a sentence -- a series of words -- which has the power to destroy them.
Also another question that came to my mind: Do zombies spawned in zombie sieges behave any other than normal zombies when it comes to despawning?
Zombie sieges ignore the light level right?
Horizon to horizon.
