My dog, whom I named "Barky McDogface", managed to survive quite a few things that I thought would have killed him. When he walked into running lava, I quickly poured a bucket of water on him and fed him some food. He barely survived a creeper explosion, and I didn't have the proper food to feed him for a whole night, but I protected him until mourning. He even went with me into the Nether and came back alive, helping me kill a few blazes after I splashed him with some fire resistance.
He died by teleporting next to me, which happened to be inside an active mob grinder. I was too late.
I was out building a long rail to connect my house to a new project. I happened to be in a taiga biome when it got dark so I tamed 3 wolves to protect me because I didn't want to quit working for the night. They kept getting between me and where I wanted to place blocks or dig up the ground, so I killed them. Killed them dead.
I've had many wolves die since the update, but the most tragic one is also the most recent one(and by tragic I mean dramatic)
I was playing on my hardmode file, and found an npc village. I figured I'd steal all the wheat and start building nearby, because it was a pretty flat area. right inbetween extreme hills and the plains. I went to go get some wood, and lost track of the time, I looked into the sky, and the sun was close to setting. I may have made a dumb decision, by going to the village to wait it out instead of my base. Yeah, my wolf and I had to fight off a zombie siege, and the village didn't even have any iron golems to help. We lasted till almost morning, and the final skelly around us shot sir wolfenstien in the ass with an arrow, and it died. That skeleton's head is now on a pike(fence, derp) in my bedroom.
At least that dirty dropped its head. Friggin skellingtons, man
I was going exploring across the massive ocean by my base for the first time, and I took my dog with me. I had no idea that dogs did not teleport to you if their chunk is unloaded. So I started across the ocean and 5 min. Later when I got to the other side, it was raining, and my dog was gone.
It took me the longest time to figure out what happened.
Eventually I figured it out and headed back home, and there was my dog. At this point the rain turned into a thunderstorm. I was just off shore from my dog and safety, when out of nowhere, lightning strickes and killed my poor dog. I can still see his fur being scortched and blackened. I made a grave for him in my gardens.

Thossssse are sssssome nice catsssss you have there.”Haha, I do have cats. You can’t come near me now!" HAHAHAHAH BOOOOOM!!! The only creeper in the world not afraid of cats just had to find you, didn’t it.
My story is the following: I was walking home from mining with my pet wolf on a SMP server, I walked down my towns path towards my house. Then randomly these 3 players come up and attack me, Of course my wolf fights them and kills 2 of them. I was fighting the last guy, who turned out to be staff. He struck me with lightning and instantly killed my wolf, and left me with half a heart. I came back to my house sad about my loss.
I was returning home after taming about a dozen wolves and it started raining. I turn around in time to see a creeper sneaking up on me. He started hissing and I instinctively smacked him with my bow while backing away. My new friends charged in just in time to get vaporized. Only one survived. That one later took a flaming arrow meant for a skeleton. None of them made it back to the house
was on my first server ever, 1.7.3 BETA. Some admins were mucking around with tnt or something... don't remember it well... anyway i stepped outside my back door straight onto a stone pressure plate. I punched my wolf (rexo) into the far end of my room, and the tnt exploded, i barely survived... i then saw a guy with a bow (remember it was in the times of rapid bows) and he sent a stream of arrows at me, i was dead in an instant. My wolf chased after him and managed to hit him twice, then the guy knocked him off a cliff.
I later put a grave mark down where i punched rexo into the corner, and again at the cliff where he died.
Later, while i was walking around, i found that guys house...

Was in a world with friend. I was riding on my horse and trying to get it across a river. It got stuck and I was trying to get it out. I didn’t know my to wolves were in the river and were drowning. By the time I got out I saw in the chat Wolf Drowned. I was praying it was just my friends dog so I looked for just a second. Her dog was still alive. I still had hope because of my other dog. Then I saw again Wolf Drowned. I was devastated. I still am.
Woofy was cute. woofy was brae. woofy died a hero. I was mining, i had my back turned. I had a traitor among my wolves. I whapped it by accident. It neary killed me. Woofy helped me when nobody else did. He died. I lived. rest in peace, woofy.
I'm pretty sure Wolves wouldn't last long in the Nether even in a very large pack, because there's way too many hazards for them to avoid in addition to being attacked by Piglin, which is bound to happen once they see Piglin or other mobs starting to attack you.
additionally Ghasts would too easily evade them, since Wolves are not a flying mob.
It would be foolish to bring Wolves into the Nether, but then some people first starting out the game most definitely have attempted it, with epic fail on their part.
A pack of Wolves are an effective defence in the Overworld, but only if you manage them properly and keep feeding them to restore their health after each night of attack, in addition to keeping spare Wolves locked away in case your army dies.

Invariably, dogs will always, eventually, run in front of my bow and get plugged by an arrow. That's how 99.9999% die.
