38 here. I play mostly on an adult-only server I found on MCForum here a couple years ago. Shameless plug if anyone's looking for a server (PC version): http://www.minecraftforum.net/forums/servers/pc-servers/687191-jackals-den-1-11-2-mature-21-map-server-age-1560. Its "mostly" vanilla with a bit of anti-griefing (not that there's a big griefing problem being a whitelist-based server of course, but you know..) and a few command blocks thrown around.

All right, I'll admit it - I'm OLD. I recognize nearly all of the references to ancient hardware here and some of the real old games too. I only just discovered Minecraft though! I lost touch with gaming a lot when Sierra games shuttered; although playing single player, I sometimes feel the world is very, very quiet and a bit lonely for that, I am enjoying exploring and learning new tricks. I feel like I have lots to learn, have not even gotten to enchanting or brewing so far! I don't want to hurry through any of this.
49 as of February, my wife will be 59 this year. We've tried other servers, but I ended up running my own whitelist server to avoid problems. I played with Spigot, and never thought I'd want to abandon plugins. Unfortunately, maintaining a Spigot server and plugins takes more work than I can manage in a 55 hr work week (this week I hit 66 hrs, most likely). One of our players has a dad who also plays on our server in his 70's, but his reflexes are "not so good". With the Spigot plugin "EssentialsX" I had "God Mode" easy, which would let the gentleman mine and enjoy the game without having to worry about how to deal with mobs. But at this point we had several Worlds courtesy of Multiverse, Extra Hard Mode plus BiomeBundle on one "set" (Overworld, Nether, End) and the "Vanilla" set of worlds we didn't play in anymore because we were on the Extra Hard Mode. I fired up a world with The Tempest Box on the 17w06a snapshot, and my wife and I decided to see if the few players we had could enjoy going "back to basics". With the snapshot, there is no "Spigot", no plugins, no LiteLoader, no EssentialsX (with /back, /home, /tpa and so on... and no /god mode.)
The server is mostly played by my wife and me, the friend of ours and his father. We get visits by my sister and my wife's son, and that's about it. When Spigot is an option, I plan to keep things VERY light & tight. The more plugins I had, the more I have to "do something" to maintain it, and I simply can't invest the time and still be able to enjoy the game. So I'm going to avoid things that modify terrain or game-play in any significant way. If it came right down to it, we *may* have to go to Realms to keep the cost down, in which case there will be no "Spigot", no plugins, no LiteLoader, no mods. So we are going for the game that we can move to the Realms service. THEN I won't have to do anything at all except play.
Machine history... I was there when my dad put together a Heathkit computer that looked like a fancy calculator glued to a circuit board and plugged into a TV. Keyboards were a later frill. ZX-80 was my Dad's "home computer", and we also got into the C=64. I loved Swinth. Anyone remember ? I learned 6502 machine code. Didn't have an assembler, couldn't afford to buy one. So I just learned how to write out the numbers and poke the values in, let it rip.
Club Caribe on AOL, WorldsAway on Compuserve, I was there as Malachi at first, then later switched my name to Romaq and stuck with that name since. Diversy Dial, I used my C=64 to connect to someone else's Apple II server to chat.

Sorry, don't recall Swinth, but thanks for the blast from the past of Heathkit! We started out with a TRS-80(Radio Shack, anyone remember those?) and our son (who now has 2 sons of his own) played 688 Attack Sub with my husband a lot. Graduated up to building our own 386s and so on. We are all in the tech field for work, so lots of this came naturally for us. It is those young grandsons who got me hooked on Minecraft, they and another of the grandsons (who is a little bit older, a tween) play now pretty avidly.
Ah! I remember the Trash 80's! I used to go down to the corner Radio Shack to play on them after school. The first computer I owned was one I purchased - it was a Compaq 386sx.
We used TRS-80's at school, but it was the C=64 I loved. I was able to get into the machine code.
Now I'm sorting out redstone, how to get parts to NOT interact while trying to keep it small, how to avoid lag issues. I traded out the redstone dropper elevator for a modified version of DocM77's item elevator.
At this point, getting one's head into the "machine space" of the latest desktop game rig is highly unlikely. I can see where Minecraft can encourage the thinking process and doing "cool stuff" they can see, things they can easily tinker with, and bridge the gap towards learning micro-controllers or Java and so on. I do hope Mojang works towards opening the API so the tinkering I was able to do on the C=64 *then* is what kids will be able to do through Minecraft.
Greetings. I'm a granny, turned 65 and retired in April. I enjoyed reading the posts on this thread - hadn't thought of Sierra or Zork in many years. Anyone remember Myst? I played Frogger on my first computer, green-screen DOS 8088 IBM XT clone. $1500 was a lot of money in 1985! Never had time for multi-player online games, but I've been playing solo vanilla MC (survival mode) for about a year now, and have thought about joining someone's realm. I always planned to do more once I had the time. So now I do!! Anyone on this thread still open to new members? I don't have a server of my own set up, although I'm considering....
I think I qualify as "older," especially in the MC world! What's involved? Should I have a headset with mic? I've see some YouTube vids of children playing together with voice, but I'm not sure I have the bandwidth for that! This one little girl, dang, she was FAST. My pace is much slower, and hampered by not being a touch-typist.
OK, so I have completely exposed my intractable Noobyness. "Tree puncher" is not a handle, it's a forum status. D' Oh! So why is your name in orange? Does that mean anything in particular? And what is "curse premium?" Such a noob am I.
not sure what the TREE PUNCHER thing is i was just promoted to it like 2 hrs ago and i think the curse premium is from my activity before twitch bought curse and that is why my name is orange

Hi chamisa22,
Yep, I remember Myst! Congratulations on your recent retirement - better build and mine before life catches up to that - retirement gets pretty busy after a bit, I think you will find! I am not on any servers, I too play all single player survival mode.
I just unearthed my 4 CD set of MYST III: Exile (The perfect place to plan revenge).

If you aren't part of the solution, then you obviously weren't properly dissolved.
I am determined not to get too busy. I have been too busy for decades, and I'm tired. I have begun to go to gym and I'm working with a trainer, I am so weak I can't believe it - 40 years of a desk job and no time to spend on myself. I always said my first focus after retiring would be to get fit.
I seem to be stuck in a rut in MC, want to play with some others to get new ideas!
Maybe you get different labels like Tree Puncher or "out of water" for being active on the forum. New labels to indicate participation?

I had my first programming class in college in the 1980s if that gives you any clue.
I was teaching programming in college in the 1970s.
So we're both older than the majority even on this thread, I guess. But I'd rather not say my age.
hey i'm 33 playing minecraft since 2014
