So I thought you were always supposed to spawn on solid ground, but I just started a large biomes world and, after deleting the first couple which spawned me in the jungle (yuck!), I ended up spawning in midair, above water, just offshore of a small island in the middle of the ocean. Is that weird? I've never seen it before. I've heard that in earlier versions you would always spawn on sand, usually on a beach, but that's clearly not the case anymore since they've introduced the different biomes and now you can spawn almost anywhere except underground.
If anyone wants to check it out, the seed is -749342503746528930, and it's 1.3.2, large biomes on, cheats (if it matters) off and bonus chest off.
It can happen, I stumbled on a similar spawn as you did. The seed Lonely Hell spawns you a bit above water as well, right next to a small island with a single tree (Large Biomes enabled)
Screenshot of the island between spoilers for the interested, so I don't derail this thread.
That's all you got, for miles around (there's some tiny islands further out, but no trees! Only one seems to be on the starting island.
This can happen in ocean biome spawns. In fact I remember one back in 1.8 that dropped you into the ocean with no land at all in sight. I was on hard when I tried it and starved to death right after I found an island with a tree.
No, I posted about this a few weeks ago. In Large Biomes, the oceans are 4x larger, just like everything else. The code chooses your spawn point randomly, and then seeks around for dry land; but it's optimized for Normal Biomes. In Large Biomes, it often seeks around in the same 200m radius, and then gives up and plops you in water.
I tested 10 seeds, and in two I spawned in the drink. Small statistics, but it's not very rare with Large Biomes.
As an aside, I think it no longer spawns you underground, ever. That used to be the result of an ocean spawn point, but I've never had it happen.

That makes sense.
As for spawning underground, I haven't ever had it happen since beta so not really sure. In beta it definitely was not linked to ocean spawning. I once spawned in a skel dungeon that was about 10 blocks or so under dry ground (not an island either). Scariest damn challenge to get out alive. The thing was completely sealed off except one side had some gravel. I managed to mine a piece before I died. When I respawned I grabbed it and placed it by a chest near a corner, died again, mined a second piece, died, picked it up and placed it on the other piece, died again, got behind the gravel and managed to punch a block out of the floor for more cover, then punched my way over and staired up and out. I think I might have died once or twice doing that.
Spawning can be very random, but usually you're suppose to spawn on ground, like Boundegar said, with large biomes, where you normally would spawn on land, because the ocean is bigger, it is where the land is suppose to be,
I created a new world the other day and it spawned me in an extreme hills biome... in the sky... Specifically high above the mountains, and I dropped down, died, and respawned about 5500 blocks away

Hahahaha holy hell! It didn't occur to you to just get a fresh seed?

You think magic isn't real? Consider this: for every person, there is a sentence -- a series of words -- which has the power to destroy them.
Hmmm, reminds me of survival island.

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
Stupid 3D..

At least I wasn't too far from the shore of a decent sized continent.
