While in the middle of my second serious attempt at braving the MC universe with one life, I decided to take a break from the stressful life of Hardcore Mode to write this Guide as I go. I am no pro, but the following is what I have learned and wish to share with those of you who share my unending desire to beat every game I play on the hardest setting.
First, thank Notch we now actually have something to work towards, not that I minded aimlessly wandering the wilderness in search of... of.... an even more epic mountain than the last. And I would be the first to admit that the endless hunt for more diamonds is now a core part of my being. But now word of a horrific terror has spread and I have accepted the challenge set before me. To slay that Beast we lovingly know as the Enderdragon, all the while knowing that the slightest slip/burp/explosion could dash my dreams and aspirations to bloody pieces.
Second, this is one of the hardest games to actually beat on its hardest setting that I have ever played. Mainly because the whole one life concept is rarely built into the typical game and is rather a seperate challenge that the internet invents.
So beware travelers, this may end up driving us to insanity. If this is the last you hear of me, assume the worst.
Ok, so yeah I was going to write a guide, best get on with it:
I will start with a list of guiding Principles/Standards/Commandments/HardLearedLessons, that I always always practice while Hardcoring.
In no specific order:
*Always Kill Chickens! Feathers > diamonds* *Break Gravel Blocks Often! Flint > diamonds* *Live every moment like there is a creeper behind you, chances are there is.* *Keep your hunger meter full at all times, regenerating health is salvation* *Always sprint out of doors/CaveOpenings* *ASAP get a bucket of water and keep it on your hot-bar for the rest of time* *Assume there is LAVA behind that block you are breaking* *Assume your next seemingly safe step will drop you into an ocean of LAVA, in caves I have found that what looks like a safe step may be a 20 level drop into the said sea of LAVA* *Listen for LAVA* *Fear LAVA* *Respect LAVA, but know that it is not your friend and will kill you and never shed a tear*
*by now I hope you get that LAVA is probably going to be what kills you.* *Iron Armor is the difference between life and death* *Pick a system for placing your torches and stick to it so you don't get lost*
Ok, now for that that is over, let us move on to the... Nitty Gritty, shall we say. Here are the steps that I have taken that have brought me to where I am now. In my current game I am at level 38 and have endless stacks of iron, 4 enderpearls, 37 Diamonds, and of coarse my pack of wolves which is ever growing.... I am proud of my accomplishments, but I am also very aware of how little I have done. The looming and ever closer threat of the Nether is most likely what prompted me to pause and write down this "guide" <-- notice the quote unquote Ok, here we go!
Step #1 - Day 1 - Most of you know what to do, but for those of you who lived in a closet until now and just started playing Minecraft, punch a tree! Here is my tips list for any Day 1, hardcore or survival:
~Daylight~
-Find the closest tree, punch the **** out of it. If there are no trees.... kill yourself.
-Craft a Crafting Table. No, this is not a paradox.
-Craft Wooden Pickaxe.
-Find closest stone and mine around 20 blocks to start. I usually just dig diagonally down through the dirt I am standing on, about 4ish levels you should hit stone.
-Craft Stone Axe/Clear Cut a stack or two of wood.
-Turn part, not all, of the wood into planks and build a tiny shack.
-After this is pretty much up to you, and depends on how much daylight you have left.
-I like to look for a few sheep so that I can make a bed for my little shack. Being able to skip the night isn't necessary, but it is nice!
-Also kill nearby animals for food and grab any nearby coal that you can before you hide out in your shack for the night...
-craft door so that you can peak around outside and keep an eye on the zombie hoard. Oh and remember that zombies can break doors now... so... if you are too scared just block yourself in and turn up the brightness in your settings.
~1st Night~
-Craft Stove
-If you don't have coal, use 2 sticks to cook a piece of raw wood into charcoal. Use that charcoal to cook 8 more pieces of raw wood in to 8 charcoal.
-use 7 pieces of charcoal to craft torches.
-use 1 piece to cook any food that you have.
-craft 3 stone swords, 2 stone pickaxes, 1 stone shovel, 2 chests
-wait for pretty sunrise.
Now you are past day 1. YAY!
Step #2 - Should I stay or should I go? - If you really like the area you spawned in then you can stay, but I usually pickup my stove, crafting table and bed and take off at the first sight of the sun. Leaving my shack behind as a monument to the start of this grand adventure. My Day 2/3ish priority, regardless if you stay or not, is always... COWS! I take any food I can get at the start but my main prey is of a bovine nature. I dash through the wilderness in search of my mooing friends in hopes to gather enough steak and leather to last a life time. If Notch is feeling kind that day, they bounty is plentiful... but Notch is not always known to be in a kind and giving mood, so I am willing to compromise. I also keep in mind that Villages tend to spawn in fields and deserts, so I make sure to keep an eye out and hopes up, for such a town.
While hunting these heifers, watch for coal and iron at cave entrances, and if you think you have found a good cave system, it might be a good idea to setup your first base of operations.
If you are lucky you will have killed enough cattle to make a Suit-O-Betsy. I think you need 24 pieces of armor material to make a full set so make sure to rejoice when the holy Notch has seen fit to grant you said pieces. But don't kill yourself with boredom trying to get leather, take what you get and once you have a good supply of food, a stack or two, you are ready for a serious trip into the bowels of the planet.
Step #3 - Underearthly Supplies - For my first spelunking adventure I make sure to bring a few items: 2 swords(in case one breaks on you in the heat of battle, it is good to have backup), 4+ stone pickaxes and 4+ stone shovels(I like to carry a bunch of pickaxes so that I can get into a groove and not have to bother making new pickaxes very often), A full stack of Raw wood; As many torches as you have been able to craft up to this point; Whatever leather armor you made before you got bored of killing cows; And 1-2 stacks of Raw Meat(I prefer steak and chicken being an American). If you happened to find some iron around and can make a bucket, do that and fill it with water, if you are quick this can save you if you find yourself in lava or on fire. I also like to have a couple crafting tables and chests on me so that I can leave them in convenient places throughout the cave.
Step #4a - The Coalden Rule - Once you have found your first good cave system and you have enough food to do some serious delving, it is time to bank some serious coal. You almost can't have enough.... almost. Cooking food, smelting iron ore, and crafting torches will quite literally burn through your coal stacks at a time. Like I mentioned in the first list, be strategic about your torches. I err on the side of lighting the **** out of my caves. This is a well known tip but I will tell you how my system works. When I am on my way in I always put torches on the right wall. If a tunnel is particularly wide and I need more light I put two torches on the same block on the left wall. This way when I need to head back to the surface I just follow the left hand torches. I light up big rooms as quickly as possible, not caring too much about strategy and more about stopping monsters from spawning around me.
Step #4b - The IRON rule - Get Iron, get lots of iron, and get it fast. The sooner you can trade your flimsy armor for some of the manly stuff, the better. As I collect Iron I like to have a central-ish location where I can have a bunch of stoves putting all my coal to good use smelting my iron. I make an iron sword as fast as possible and maybe 1 iron pickaxe, then I focus on the armor. Iron armor is the most important thing up to this point. Get in it as fast as possible and your chances for survival will be greatly increased. With a full suit of iron armor no single Mob(excluding the dragon) poses any real threat, even an Enderman. You still need to play carefully but you can also be confident while fighting off the zombie hoards and the creeper ninjas.
Step #5 - Robin Hood Rule - when you have killed enough spiders make a bow, they are awesome. Get good with your bow. I haven't gotten there yet, but I hear your bow will come in handy against the dragon so yeah, get good. Also, killing archers might drop bows for you, one I just killed today dropped an enchanted bow that I am now using, so be sure to kill archers.
Step #6 - Diamonds *****! - It is time to go get you some diamonds! They live almost exclusively at levels 5-13 i think. You can press F3 to see what your location is, the Y coordinate is what level you are on I believe. Sometimes I just look around in the cave at that level, and other times I just pick a wall and dig a 2x2 hallway. Both methods yield... DIAMONDS! There are lots of mining methods that you can look up too. Remember to be careful of LAVA though, it is literally all around you. What you do with your diamonds is up to you. I saved all of them until I had a substantial collection going... 37. It was enough to craft a set of armor, and some tools. I haven't used any of my diamond stuff yet, except for my first diamond pick, which I used to harvest some obsidian for a enchantment table. Learn about enchantment here --> and here --> http://pernsteiner.o...ecraft/enchant/
Step #7 - WOLVES! ADVENTURE! - By now you have almost all the supplies you need to get out there in the world. I pick a direction and go. If you find wolves feed them bones and have them join your roaming gang. Feed them food so they mate and make your gang bigger. You will start to eagerly await the night. Monsters will fear you. Kill all of them. They all drop useful items. Zombies drop wolf food. Skeletons drop arrows/bows/wolfbait. Creepers drop TNT powder. Spiders drop... ok string kinda sucks... XP! And most importantly, Enderman drop them pretty pearls that are oh so crucial! If you have wolves be careful that creepers don't explode near them. I have lost many a friend that way. It's too bad wolves can't wear iron, you will have enough of it
Also, this trek is not aimless, the entire time you are searching for a village. And remember they spawn on flat places usually. Once you find one, search the buildings bookshelves to use on your enchantment table. Also grab any sugar cane you find. Once you have your enchantment table, it is your choice if you want to level up or not. This is a little dangerous but I think might be worth it. Once I reach level 40 I am going to enchant one item, not decided yet, to level 40. After that I am going to level up to 1-10ish and enchant each of my unused diamond armor pieces and my diamond tools and bow. All the while hunting for enderpearls at night. Oh and I don't bring the wolves with me if I am going underground, or into the mountains... they tend to push you off cliffs or into lava or just kill themselves. Wolves are for the plains/forests/desserts.
That is all I got for now. My plan is to collect Enderpearls until I have more than enough and then find the Stronghold with the gate the End. Once I have set up shop there, I will venture into the Nether to collect what I need there. Stock up on potions and such, then head to The End and hopefully slay this vile beast!
From my previous adventures in the Nether on my Creative Server, Archery and enchanted armor is key. Fire resistance in potion form or enchantments is awesome. And archery will help with lowering the Ghast population. I don't think you can get water into the nether, so yeah be careful, there is lots of fire. I will also probably update this once I have been there.... if I make it that is...
Lastly, I will leave you with a screen shot of my inventory setup that I run when spelunking/adventuring. If I have a base of operations and I am just going out to kill things I run a simpler setup, but these items are all very important to me most of the time.
Some quick notes: I like to keep dirt next to my pickaxe in case of lava spillage. Sometimes I use the pumpkin head on Enderman, because they won't run away. Wolves are also really awesome for killing Enderman and not having them run off on you. Also I quickly learned to use the 1 key to switch to my sword fast. And there is that water bucket, just in case.
Ok that was fun. And pointless. But whatever floats my boat
I'll be back with more tactics later. Maybe I will even take some more fancy screenshots.
Questions are welcome. Flame on as always, I know you can't help it Internets. Happy Hardcoring! And remember don't ever let your guard down and get comfortable, all it takes is one perfectly placed creeper explosion and 3 disastrously timed skeletons and you can kiss your hard work goodbye. Also.... LAVA!
Slightly Deranged from Hardcore Induced Stress, daniel.
P.S. Oh yeah, feel free to add your thoughts/tips/whatever. Lets make this the end all be all conglomerate of hardcore knowledge for all those out there in the Internets that may be searching for it.
Bring plenty of milk buckets along in case you're exploring a mineshaft. Cave spiders are to hardcore players in Minecraft as oblivion knights are to whirlwind barbarians in Diablo 2. In fact, you might end up fearing them more than lava.

I lived by these rules before you posted them, and I've beaten the enderdragon using these tactics. However, I try to use my diamonds for everything necessary: pickaxe, sword, enchnating table, but most importantly armor.

Thanks for the tip! I added it to the wiki! I actually came across a huge mineshaft and only happened upon one spawner and it only had a chance to spawn one spider which I quickly dispatched, and then turned the spawner off with my torches I completely forgot about what a terror these things can be from my experience on my server. Anyways, good call! I will probably add more about it later
If anyone else has any tips that I should add to the wiki I would love to hear them!
This is an great guide and it is proven through your success! I will totally use this if I ever play hardcore mode. I prefer building pretty things over surviving crazy game modes
Great guide and close to what I do although I probably don't hunt as much. I prefer to build some "farms" in my first base. I'd recommend that you do some enchanting early and not save up all your XP for 1 big one which could end up sucking big time... Just using 1 XP on a sword should give you sharpness I, using 1 on a pickaxe, shovel, axe should give you efficiency I. Those will give you a slight edge for all your early fighting and spelunking.

haha I am doing ok, but I wouldn't call it success yet! And building pretty things is perfectly awesome as well.

yeah I can see the value of doing that, but I like high level enchantments better
Also, I ended up dying in lava.... falling prey to ignoring my own rules and being careless. Just because you are in a Nether Fortress, does not mean you are safe from lava. I probably fell 50 levels into an ocean of lava. I almost made it out, but not quick enough.

Time to get back on the horse
