You gain exp from mining coal, lapis and redstone. The amount you get is much greater than killing mobs. You can easily get to a very high level just by mining those specific ore types. For smelting, you gain exp when the finished product is taken out of the furnace. That amount is roughly the same as a mob.
you get experience from mining coal, redstone, lapiz lazuli, and diamond. in the earlier snapshots the amount of xp was the same as killing mobs. however they have now toned down the amount of xp you get from xp. (you still level up really fast though)

Just to echo what has been said, but you DO NOT gain xp from mining Iron ore, (which is stupid, considering you get it for mining coal). Probably just an oversight that will be fixed for the official 1.3 release

It's so people don't mine the ore, place it down, then mine it again...
Also, how does the smelting experience work? Do you have to stand there during the smelting process to get the experience?
