Auto-farming...it's a thing. I don't personally like it but it is a thing.
How did the creeper blow up the stuff inside your chests??? I thought that the chest will just drop everything then.
I am so glad to see that I am not alone in this. Auto farming just feels a bit lazy and takes the heart out of the game, though I can imagine some certain limited reasons to use it. I also don’t understand people who never farm. I like to farm, lay out towns, give my peeps extra food and get them to have little villagers, etc. All part of building my empire!!! Bwahahahahahahaha... was that out loud?
Problem with mining is on servers. You have to go a decent amount of way from the spawn to find a space to mine, and if the server is vanilla, you must rely on carts or iceway for transportation if there is no teleport (elytra are another scarcity problem on servers).
I agree that in single player, unless you have plenty of time AFK and little time of actual play, finding badlands with an exposed mineshaft it's easier.

Auto farm and manual farming are different things entirely, I manually farm gold off Drowned Zombies and doing so I've managed to get 3 stacks of gold blocks. I need this much for powered rails, if I didn't I would be stuck pushing around mine carts on regular rails, which quite frankly sucks.
One thing I would like to automate is a rail system.
and it is what redstone was intended for.
anyway some things farming is needed for, whether some people accept it or not.
If farming were removed from the game entirely, even manual resource farms, some of us would have no more reason to play the game.

It's not lazy, it's efficient and smart but a lot of thinking and feels very...ungamelike.
I do farm sometimes, but my main goal in this game is to hoard treasure, lol.

Farming is the only way to get renewable resources or get large quantities of something within a reasonable amount of time.
mining alone results in wasted materials if you try to use them for big projects and repairing or replacing your armour and tools at the same time.
it's absurd that some people believe there shouldn't be any way to farm some materials,
by their logic we shouldn't be able to farm crops in Minecraft, even though that has been a staple in the game since survival started.
it's bad enough that recycling armour and tools via smelting is inefficient and only returns a single nugget per item.
Iron should be common and recyclable, as it isn't even the most durable material in the game, it serves as a starter material until you've got diamonds.
I understand Minecraft isn't an RPG, but this is irrelevant as to whether or not resources should be farmable imo.

I never said farming shouldn't happen. I just don't like it myself. Please don't put words into our mouths here, because not every criticism leads to a suggestion. This is the slippery slope fallacy.
I don't remember bringing up RPGs myself but you're right, it should make no difference.
I would like smelting and recycling to be more efficient but that's another topic.

There's a reason I referred to them as "their" and not you, I wasn't saying you did.
I accept that diamonds are supposed to be rare in the game for balance reasons, so I'm indifferent as to whether or not diamond gear gets removed from trades. In fact it would probably improve the game if they did because there would be more incentive to mine for them and it would increase the value of diamond ore, and it would also encourage people to be more careful when mining for diamonds, knowing they're not renewable they would have to use some long term planning to keep their diamonds which they mined for, it would also make Mending enchantment more valuable imo.
I think it would be a good idea if we made a separate thread about all this though.

Yes it would be. And it's not clear who 'they' refers to sometimes, especially if you bring up these topics frequently.
at the start of this year me and a couple friends started Minecraft Realm, on one of my many mining sessions I found lots of ores, and many diamonds, I even had enough for a full set of diamond gear, which at the time was unheard of in our little community of friends. Fast foward a couple weeks later and I was mining quartz in the nether with my new fancy diamond armour, I had about a stack of the stuff so I decided to head home, when suddenly a ghast shot a fire ball at me and the block underneath me broke from the impact of the explosion, beneath me was a massive lava lake I fell right into, and I lost all of my diamond armour I got from that loong mining trip!
Moral of the story: Only bring netherite to the nether!

if only we could do the same to shulker boxes, upgrade them with netherite so they don't burn in lava.
It would be a sad day if they burned and you lost a lot of diamonds that way.
Fortunately this hasn't happened to me, yet, or friends who play on my server.
But the Nether isn't really a safe place to use these.
All it takes is one time where you accidentally break a block beneath the shulker box
with your efficiency 5 pickaxe, and that drops into lava which is possible and your shulker is gone forever,

I suppose when I think of auto-farming versus manual farming the examples that come to mind are manually planting and harvesting crops or finding something to kill to harvest its resource versus these contraptions people build with Redstone. I saw one where you could put a couple dozen cows into one block and auto feed, breed, and kill them. You’d get tons of steak and leather, but that really kills the game for me. That is the sort of thing I don’t get or enjoy.
Admittedly, these contraptions are brilliant and if you are trying to build something unique or special then I can see doing this once in awhile, but for 5e most part it seems like you might as well just play on creative mode and cut out the middle step. However, I have no problem with farming manually. That’s an intrinsic part of the game. Accumulating the resources to do things is what makes the game worth playing!
Now my other point about people who don’t farm: it seems to me that accumulating lots of resources, like a food hoard to draw upon, would be almost impossible without a farm. Not to mention accumulating saplings so I can rapidly plant, grow, and cut trees. And keeping flowers around for dye or to get bees quickly, etc. All of this is part of farming for me I suppose.

Agreed.
I don't see why resources should be just a one time thing or a drop you only get once in a blue moon from mobs, even for the sake of balance that concept is just ridiculous because Minecraft is not one of those games that you stop playing once you beat the final boss.
There's hours of replayability involved, and with replayability comes the need for additional loot.
and without mending enchantment it would be impossible to keep your equipment forever.
Because anvils don't allow for indefinite repairs.
Mending is the only way you'd keep your enchanted diamond sword or pickaxe,
if indefinite repairs were made impossible then it would be robbery, of players time and effort.
If you are fine living like a nomad, the number of structures as of 1.16 makes it quite possible to just travel forever and have enough food all while accumulating resources, limited only by your inventory space.

As was discussed earlier in a different thread inventory space was a serious problem before 1.17 update,
but with bundles you can stop two incomplete stacks from hogging up two inventory slots, that would include diamonds.
One time, I was playing one block skyblock with my cousin and I made diamond boots and said "diamond Yeezy's like Quackity" ( her favorite streamer at the time) and she said "cool" then a silver fish spawned and hit me off the edge. Thus, losing 42 diamonds.
There's a give and take to everything, a careful player will find this change worth it.
Yeah overall I think this change outweighs the negatives, a change like this was needed because it helps makes inventory management more efficient, and it's balanced, because it only allows you to make a mixed bag at a total of 64 items, which is worth a full stack of a single item that stacks up to 64, and thus consuming the same amount of inventory as each individual stacks would.
So I have a new diamond lost story and a question. My two 9 year olds have been playing Minecraft with myself and my wife. Both of the, are little kleptos (I am doing a bang up job raising the next generation….) and they keep hiding my stuff. Well it happened again this week: my son was asking about the 25-30 diamonds I had in storage. He wanted to “carry” them to keep them “safe.” Not being a complete idiot (only partial idiocy here my friends…) I suggested to him that they were safer staying right where they were. Well, a couple nights later and here we are, the diamonds are gone. I think he buried them, but I checked a few obvious places. Now I need to rely on his honesty….
or is there a way I can see chests underground? In the meantime, does anyone want children? I have one going cheap….
I was throwing a stack of something in lava to make room, and I threw away my 30-40 diamond stack by accident. I died inside like you wouldn't believe.
