this happened right now and i was hopping around a cave to go up a waterfall and i fell into a lava pit that i couldnt get out of losing my netherite pickaxe, sword, my 12 diamonds, my full enchanted iron armour, and my hot bar items ive had since day 1
netherrite tools and armour does not get destroyed in lava, so it had to have disappeared when you attempted to retrieve the pickaxe because the 5 minute timer expired. Next time bring a bucket of water and douse the top of the lava pit where possible to turn the top layer into obsidian, the water will nullify the burn status effect, also it is very important to remain afloat on the lava while doing this otherwise you will die again, or you know, you could make potions of fire resistance, they only cost magma creams, glass bottles, brewing stands (which also use blaze rods), netherwart and redstone if you want to enhance their duration.

If you don't want to explore the nether yet, in 1.16 you can trade some gold to piglins and sometimes they give you a fire resistance potion.

That is true, but in 1.17 they're going to be removing gold ingot drops from Drowned Zombies and replacing them with copper ingots, which is a terrible change and makes gold a lot harder to get so trading with Piglin will become a much less viable option.
But it appears Jeb doesn't like gold farming, so I'm not so sure he is a better head of Mojang than Notch anymore, not after this.
Everything else about the Caves and Cliffs update I am in full support of, it's just that particular feature me and a friend of mine hate.
I don't understand the statement. Unless on a PVP server, gold is still almost useless anyway and you can still build a zombiefied piglin based mob farm anyway (either in the nether or in the overworld through portals).
But I was simply saying you can bring some gold (a stack?) to your first nether portal, find a piglin and obtain an emergency fire resistance potion before you can brew them yourself by visiting a Nether Fortress. So in this case this initial gold should come from mining anyway.

This is incorrect, gold is actually needed for powered rails, and to have multiple railway systems thousands of blocks long it does burn through your gold supply rather quickly. Sure you could just use gold ore to supply the gold for the rails, but if you're going to be using them for trades, enchantments and potions etc, then you can understand why people get upset when they find out their farms they relied on for so long no longer work.
They already removed the Notch apple, how much further with the nerfs are they going to go before they're satisfied with the result? and on the subject of this thread it's not very helpful in protecting your items either, without gold you're not getting netherrite ingots.
TheMasterCaver may have a different point of view about this, but people like me, Lizking10152011 and some other people aren't happy about it.
Oh yes, everybody does thousands blocks long railway systems and with this in mind, a single gold ingot stack to try to have a pre-fortress potion of fire resistance matters. Or it doesn't.
This is rambling about a farm, and it has nothing to do with my suggestion to have a potion of fire resistance a bit earlier that a full fortress exploration.

It kinda does, because by your own admission you can get fire resistance potions from Piglin using gold ingots.
If gold farms are to be nerfed to oblivion, then trades with Piglin no longer become a viable option for a decent amount of fire resistance potions and then you end up having to brew them yourself, which in itself cost resources.
Mojang have a habit of nerfing things but don't care for how the nerfs actually affect people who play the game.
It doesn't help when advise we give others becomes obsolete because of some change that happened from an update either.

Define “decent amount”. For me is 1-2, for emergencies.

That's you only, not everyone. Not everyone plays Minecraft just for combat and mining, there's other reasons too. There are a lot of people who like to do large builds in the game, I'm one of them. People too often forget this when they make suggestions to nerf farming and that's where the complaints are coming from. Minecraft needs to cater to people of all types, not just PVPers who only play survival for combat.
Okay this was like 2/3 months ago. So I was playing the Alpha version of Minecraft not to feel nostalgic or anything I just like playing it sometimes because I like to see what people in 2010 had to deal with. Anyway I was in a cave deep underground and I see some diamonds in a wall. So I mine 2 of the diamonds and I see there was another on the left hand side of that Diamond vain. So I go for it assuming there is a floor underneath me. To keep it short and simple there was no floor underneath me. Unless you consider lava to be a floor. I lost all my good armor/tools and I had like 6 other Diamonds with me. Still hurts just thinking about it.
I once found like ~20 diamonds. On my way out of the cave, I found a lava fall, I wanted to throw away some junk and without thinking just threw my entire stack of diamonds away. I was infuriated that I just cheated and put them back.
i was mining in a cave And i found 4 diamonds, then i mined some more diamonds and i fell in a lava pit.. I was infuriated because that was the first diamonds of that survival... I lost all..

I don't really see how PVP relates to farming relates to fire potions

They give you an advantage when you're dealing with someone who has flame bows or fire aspect swords. Fire resistance potions means no burn status so you'd need a different way to damage opponents, this also means lava buckets would do nothing to hurt the player using fire resistance potions.
Anyway my point is not everyone plays Minecraft for PVP or anarchy servers or competitive stuff like that, it's nuanced and there are lots of different types of players, Mumbo Jumbo on Youtube went into detail the various types of players that exist in the Minecraft fandom.

The general reason why people play survival is combat, there is no question about it, it has always been a feature of survival. But survival provides rewarding gameplay for people who like to collect resources to do builds like yourself, so people like you understand why people who like to do a lot of builds would get upset if a nerf made the game more grindy as a result, it wastes time.
People who don't make a lot of use of rail systems are probably more interested in competitive gameplay whether it be against other players, or surviving against hostile mobs while purposefully limiting their own supplies and farms more than others to make it more challenging for them.
Some auto farm designs do in fact use rail systems, I have a friend who uses a bamboo furnace system that has perpetual fuel.
I plan to just use mine for transport and delivering stuff to friends on my server.
Some builds do involve diamonds obviously, but not a lot of them thankfully, however 1.17 update could make diamonds a lot harder to get, plus you have the Warden to worry about which means you'd need to avoid the deep dark biome if you don't want to lose your diamonds you earned.
I lost my diamonds from digging straight down and landing in lava, worst thing of my life.
.
I know that feeling, back in my newbie days I did the same mistake and lost some valuables in lava too.
You can get away with it if you're wearing enchanted armour, but in a fresh world that isn't going to happen.
It's still not a good idea to dig straight down even with fire protection 4 armour though, lava slows your movement and the fire animation gets in the way of what you're trying to see in front meaning escape is not guaranteed.

I'm actually neither a combatant nor a builder, primarily an explorer and restorer.
But I agree with your points, albeit you say them pretty much all the time, about how the games needs to appeal to everyone to an extent.
I don't see any need for raw diamonds in large amounts, especially not since trading opened up all armour and tools and weapons. Cheaper blocks exist for beacons. And I know nothing on wardens but wouldn't they be able to follow you out of that specific biome? Also, one can just strip mine and close off any caves they find, unless the new terrain underground is so swiss cheese that this becomes impossible...the new ore depths definitely will be a grind though no matter what, but that's more a topic for the update thread.

I lost a large portion of my diamonds to vanity ...

this is why i mine around diamonds now
