Actually if you use Misa's HD texture pack (shameless plug, but she does / did fantasic work) and it has various skins for not only the villagers, but also the mobs, both aggesives and passives. The villagers have both genders as well as the respective jobs (preist, blacksmith, etc) outfits. Generally there are 4 or so skins available and randomly assigned for every mob. I found it rather funny that only a single female was left in my reconstructed / remodeled village.
To further expand on my intial issue - I never found a solid solution to why or where all those villagers disappeared to. I built a few buildings before I even began tearing the old structures done, so not having any doors at any point in time during the remodeling was not the problem, I don't think. On that note though, I calculated the number of doors in the default village and there were definitely more villagers than that village was supposed to support / or spawn, which was interesting that it spawned intially with a population larger than the structures would actually support.
Drowning seems to be the most reasonable solution, but I cannot prove or disprove that theory as of yet. I had terraformed some of the beach area to be two block deep transition once in the water, though villagers have and can jump out of deep water onto the same level shoreline. So I cannot answer with any certainty as to what happened to all my villagers. It will go down in history as a strange disappearance mystery, with the likes of the Bermuda Triangle, the Lost Roanoke Settlement, and Oprah's Last Twinkie.
As for that last female villager, after numerous days and nights spent staring out at the endless expanse of ocean in mourning and loneliness, she too finally disappeared. Perhaps she died of a broken heart, or from a lonely and longing soul. Or maybe I contaminated surrounding houses with radioactive isoptopes from long days deep in my mine handling redstone dust and she developed a tumor. We may never know. I eventually completed a connecting rail line to another village and kidnapped a young, virile looking young man and a young, fertile, woman with sturdy hips and ample bosoms. From these two adolescene beeders a new generation of decendants have filled my fine village. The population swelled to a healthy 2 iron golem level and boasted many ammenities and luxuries that tempted villagers from all around to abandon their simple, dull lives and move to the big "city".
I'm not sure if I still have this file saved in my SSP folder, but I have used these valuble lessons and incorporated them into a new SMP server I started up and have been building on for some time now. I've hit 1 iron golem so far, and still have plans the the works for even more space and habitats to draw new citizens to my superb village.
