Also make sure you're using an updated texture pack ... you won't see them if you're using an older texture pack, instead you'll see an invisible block.
This may seem stupid (I'm not sure what version of minecraft you are running) but you need the latest snapshot available from mojang.
If you have it then look in the extreme hills biome, they're very hard to find (harder than diamonds) but you should find some.
Best and easiest way to get them is to trade with villagers with other items that you can easily spare.
can i give the villagers something for them?
can i find them in forest hills? (after all its hills)
