Fairly new player here... at least not one with a lot of play time.
I am looking for tips and tricks for under water construction. I have a small island home, but would like to one day connect it below ground to an under water sanctuary.
Is there anything out there that can help me breath under water? Any tips or tricks that can help me with this project?
My plan right now is to slowly create a tunnel with cobblestone going further and further down from the shore slowly filling it with sand and removing it as I go... This will be painstaking and slow...
Build a perimeter at the area you want it under, then, cover the water inside with dirt (as it's easy to dig out again), do that until you reach where you need, then continue on doing the same with the tunnel.
placing glass panes, doors, open trap doors, and iron bars underwater allows you to breath when your next to it because they aren't full blocks. This helps.
Either build around the water you want to get rid off and then put sand or dirt inside it. Or enchant a helmet to a level that you can breath underwater.
If you place a torch, it will air out that block for a short moment, long enough to catch your breath. This will only work however if it is level with your head. I also believe that if you use a bucket it will work as well.
For a straight down approach, a lily pad is awesome if you can get one. You can get a bunch of sand or gravel, a bunch of ladders, and place a lily pad on the water over the spot you want to get to, then put a block on it and use it to drop a sand/gravel column then ladders all the way down.
You can even build out in the middle of an ocean like that.
The way i made my under water base / tunnel was to
A lay out the floor
B - flll in with sand
C: dig sand out to where the roof ine will be
D: add roof
E ad walls to outside of sand
F - go in and remove sand
Also to build quickly under water, use a dirt core - not sand.
Let's say you want to make a room that is 3x3 inside with walls made of cobble. First get a way to be under water such as a door or ladder to breathe. Then near that, make a 3x3 solid core out of dirt. This represents where the dry space is when you will be done. Then surround the dirt with cobble, making the walls and ceiling, leaving a way to get inside - a 1x2 opening will do.
Once you have that done, go to the opening and start digging in from the bottom layer. This means dig out the block by your feet first. Clear out all the dirt, always removing the lowest block before taking the ones above it. This will leave you an air pocket, and eventually a dry room when you wall it off. When you wall off, do it from top to bottom instead. The opposite you did for digging out. Place the upper blocks first.
Edit: actually you can use sand if you prefer, it can be easier to remove. I don't prefer it though, because dirt doesn't fall down in front of you when you're fighting the water current.
I use reeds for underwater air holes. Very easy to tear down, though the limitations on where you can place them are a bit troublesome at times. But they can indeed be placed underwater.
As for seeing, see above. OptiFine is a performance-booster with loads of extra graphical options, but not changes to actual gameplay.
There are occasional pockets of air in the ocean which are large enough to move around in. I think these are due to sand falling after terrain generation. Find one of these ( not terribly rare in my experience, but I may spend an inordinate amount of time under the water - darn boats ) and base yourself oit of it in the build.

Thanks!
Place a door on the sea bed and it will make an air pocket. Iron bars and fences will too.

How to not die in a cave
