I usually go for wheat farms. Bread may only do two and a half foods, but I find that I usually notice my hunger bar at 2. Apples are really my preferred food because of that, but they are extremely inconsistent. Rotten Flesh is a good buffer to my main food supply, and as a bakkup. When I can find Melon seeds, I make a farm for them. Their use for potions and symmetry with pumpkins make them nice, plus no replanting (I plan to soon make automated melon farms in fact).
Cooked meat is a last resort food, since it tends to lead to wasted food and requires a lot of animal breeding (which...takes up wheat, making the animal meats redundant).
I am mostly a vegetarian in minecraft, but not in real life. So I build farms get wheat make bread get sugarcane and make a farm. When I can find it I make huge Mellon farms. Sometimes after I've farmed I lure animals into traps with wheat, then I get all of their yummy deliciousness
