Golden Apple/Cake/Cooked Porkchops. One time it took me 2 Days to get a Apple. But one time I cheated cause it took me too long to get a apple so I used single Player Commands
I've gone through several phases of food. At the start I would just kill random mobs as I came across them, and cook their meat. Then I planted some wheat, but I didn't use it to make bread. Instead I used it to lure some pigs into a fenced off area and breed them for the pork chops. I expanded my farm with cows and chickens, and I would use the cows for meat because they always drop at least 1 (and up to 3, vs. the max of 2 and sometimes none you get from pigs). I started to run out of arrows, so I bred up and slaughtered a ton of chickens, for their feathers, but the side effect was that I lived off of cooked chicken for quite a while. I found some melon seeds in a mineshaft and started growing melons, but sometimes I didn't like it because it takes so long to fill yourself up with only one meat-pop filled per slice. Not usually a big deal but when you're in the middle of battle or trying to sprint 1200 blocks across a sea-bridge, it can really add up. Recently I've been working near an NPC village that has, I think, seven wheat farms so I've been eating a lot of bread lately. I've eaten a few apples here and there when there was no meat nearby at the start of the game, but never once have I crafted a golden apple, or even a wooden bowl for mushroom stew.
When I started I made porkchops and some steak, when the livestock in my area ran out I started fishing.
After discovering a "plains" area (I started in the Taiga) I made a wheat farm (bread).
There is a river running through the area so I planted sugar cane.
Then I made some holding pens for cows, chickens and pigs, bred them with the wheat.
Now I can make bread, cake, fish, porkchops, steak, chicken and the all important non-food item arrows.
My farm is small, and not automatic.
I have 6 of every animal at any time (all I really have room given the size of the pens) and I breed them to produce 3 offspring.
Once the 3 offspring are grown I "harvest" 3 and start over.
One item I have not made yet is the mushroom stew. I have some mushrooms, but I want to grow more before I process them.
There were no food anywhere. Yeah, I put few seeds on the ground, but I'd die at least once in hunger before I would have three wheats.
This was today's experience, except the die part. Health went to half a heart and no death followed. I went AFK to let the wheat grow and recovered from total hunger that way. It took hours.
Can you actually die from hunger? Or is it death from injury while weak instead?

In hard difficulty, hunger doesn't stop at half a heart
I could make some pretty racist jokes in response to that, but I'm not racist and I love everyone. true story
I was going to post the exact same thing...
Since my main survival world in NPC Village defense and growth themed, I usually live off the bread from the pre existing farms, but I am hoping to gather some animals soon.

I honestly don't see why everyone is terrified of creepers, I've never been killed by one, and the worst that one has done to me is let my sheep escape. If you want an issue, try taking on a skeleton or cave spider.
I have way too many melons as well, but those are just very unhandy..
Then I go and kill some Mobs for more 8)If you have Mooshroom you have infinite Mushroom steve!

You think magic isn't real? Consider this: for every person, there is a sentence -- a series of words -- which has the power to destroy them.
