I made a mob trap on my singleplayer world, and since i couldn't find a dungeon, i found and made one that looks like this:
EEver since I made it, only about two mobs have actually spawned and fallen. Is there anything i'm doing wrong? There's a roof on the mob trap, and the one where they spawn has a higher roof than the roof of the water. Like this:
That cobblestone 'wall' you see at the back is the beginning of the second roof. But there are no mobs spawning, and there's no light up there. What should I do? I worked hard on this trap, and I really don't want it to go to waste. What can i do to make the mobs spawn more?
Oh come on, you didn't work hard on that tiny little trap. You have a lot of issues, did you do any research on mob spawning and look at other trap designs before building that one? Sorry if I'm coming across as harsh, but get ready to roll up your sleeves if you really want to build a productive mob trap.
To be fair you did make some okay design decisions. Now to your issues. First of all you have to understand that for a dark room spawning trap to spawn mobs you have to eliminate any dark places below light strength of 8 outside of the trap so that mobs are are forced to spawn in your trap. So you have to light up any dark places outside of your trap in spawning range, including caves underground. You'll want to light things up in relation to where you will stand to collect items from the trap because mobs spawn in relation to where YOU are. How big is spawning range you ask? Mobs spawn in a 128 block sphere around you, but not within 24 blocks of you (or your spawn point).
So basically to make your trap produce more mobs you have to increase the ratio of spawnable blocks IN your trap, in relation to the number of spawnable blocks OUTSIDE your trap. Right now you have how many spawnable blocks in your trap? 10 or maybe 20 if that ledge back there is 2 wide. So you have that many spawnable blocks and there are potentially thousands of blocks outside of your trap.
Who needs mob grinders? Light the caves under an area up, then wait for night and slaughter the hordes that spawn on the surface.
P.S. I have a larger design with all nearby caves light up, but it only spawned one creeper. EVER. 3 hours of work wasted. This is why I hate mob grinders.

Thanks so much guys,

The wiki has good info on spawning here:

Good luck!

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
Stupid 3D..
