I'm trying to make the game as vanilla as possible. The only mod I have is one that slightly affects terrain. As a person who's been playing since Alpha 1.2, Minecraft is really no challenge for me. I barely die and my sense of direction is pretty good.
I've always used the coordinates system to find my base when I died. However I hated F3 back in late beta because they implemented visible entity codes. Now that Minecraft is no challenge, I never use F3 except for when I'm checking my FPS. I also want to give maps a use, since they are pretty useless as of now. Now, I don't even use the numeral cardinal direction system.
In multiplayer I might have to use it to find directions to someone's house or base.
Does anyone else stay away from the coordinates system in singleplayer/multiplayer?
I use F3 to check my vertical co-ordinates, but that's just about it. I ignore the other two co-ordinates.
I wish they could add an altimeter to the game or something legitimate that can measure the y-coordinate. Then maybe they can add placemarks and coordinates to maps to give them a purpose. (And possibly make their range bigger and make them a building object that can be placed on walls like paintings).
Establishing portal connections without coordinates would be too much of a bother, so I'd use some tool for that as a minimum. In other words, no, I wouldn't play without coordinates.
The only time I use the X and Z coordinates is when I travel to the stronghold in my world and back to my base, since they're about 600 blocks away from each other. Other than that, I don't use X and Z at all.
I use the Y coords all the time though. I'm using it to make a slime farm currently, Use it to mine at diamond level, I use it to see if I'm close to the surface, or if I'm close to the sky limit.

'What is beauty?', because that would fall within the purview of your
conundrums of philosophy. I solve practical problems."

EDIT: Oh, and to see how deep I am underground.

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
Stupid 3D..
