Hi. I made a cow grinder. I have cows dropping down a 1x1 shaft. I used to let them just drop and die on a hopper, but then I figured I'd save some cooking time and have them burn then die. So I put netherrack at the bottom with a piston to push them off the netherrack and into a second chute that drops onto a hopper. I then strung a tripwire across the shaft to trigger the piston. Worked great.. until I noticed some cows landing on the tripwire area. I had to cut the tripwide area 2x1 because you need space under the hook for an in-air tripwire apparently. When I saw cows landing on that, I put a half-slab on the bottom but it made no difference, they can still land on it.
Is there any way to stop them from being able to land in that area?? Thanks!
Nevermind, I figured out a way. I just made the tripwide area taller then put a pair of pistons down there with pressure plates so if a cow lands on the sides, it gets shoved back into the main shaft.
Its very similar to the drop shaft in my XP farm; the mobs take fall damage on a piston sub-floor which opens a few secs after they land, via trip wire, to fall into the water flow collection point. The main shaft was 2x2, I simply opened the shaft to 4x2 underneath the trip wires so there was no ledge.

BTW I think they removed the air versus block dynamic to tripwires in 1.9 and they now work the same no matter how placed. I'll be darned if I can find where I saw that in the snapshot notes however.

I hope that you're right because that will make life a lot easier when trying to deal with tripwire hooks. I wonder how that will work with pistons extending / retracting under a tripwire. Currently it breaks the string but if it doesn't then that will open up a ton of possibilities for various redstone machine designs.

Mintutor now works in 1.13!
MrKite & Mc_Etlam ... I salute you!
Little late on this since it seems you found a solution, but you probably could have just replaced the slabs with glass.

Oh, so glass doesn't cause the air tripwire to mess up? That would've been a lot easier, lol.
Yeah, I think it's only solid blocks that mess it up.

I rebuilt my trap using glass to block the area beneath the tripwire off, works great and doesn't require the extra pistons. Thanks

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
Stupid 3D..

You're welcome, glad it worked out for you.

Something like grass or leaves would work.
Watch out for the crabocalypse. Some say the day will never come. But it will.
Feel free to drop by for a chat whenever.
If you'd like to talk with me about other games, here are a few I play.
Team Fortress 2
Borderlands series (Borderlands 2 is my favorite game, ever. TPS combat is a lot of fun and makes up for the lower-quality story, in my opinion)
Elder Scrolls series
Warframe (IGN is something like That_One_Flesh_Atronach)
Pokémon series (HGSS forever)
Rocket League
Fallout series
Left 4 Dead 2 (Boomer files always corrupt though)
SUPERHOT (SUPERHOT is the most innovative shooter I've played in years!)
Dead Rising series (Dead Rising 2 is one of my favorite games, and the 3rd was a lot of fun. 1st has poor survivor AI and the 4th is bad)
Just Cause series
Come to think of it, I mainly play fighting-based games.
