I started playing a few months ago and only recently have I realized the amazing goodies available from villagers (aka testificate.) No longer do I need to grind out diamonds and levels to create enchanted tools. Today I leveled up a new toolsmith and he now sells a diamond pickaxe with Unbreaking IIII / Efficiency III for 15 emeralds.
If you're not breeding villagers you're missing out.
Unfortunately, they do not sell things like Efficiency V, Unbreaking III diamond pickaxes or Sharpness V, Knockback II, Unbreaking III diamond swords, plus I play in 1.6.4, where I can repair and keep my gear forever as long as I never lose it - I've actually mined more than a million blocks with the same pickaxe - so the random and expensive enchanting back then is not a problem for me. Also, my playstyle nets me far more diamonds than I could ever use, without using Fortune - more than 5600 ore mined at last count - and diamonds are not very useful when they are just sitting in a chest; the same is true of XP, which I use for repairing my gear with a vast surplus left over.
That said, I've recently taken advantage of a villager I found in a naturally generated village who sells diamond pickaxes for 11 emeralds (unenchanted), with probably a double chest bought so far; they have also offered diamond boots and shovels, although I've only bought one of each to unlock the pickaxe trade (prior to 1.8 it is possible to get every piece of diamond gear from villagers, not just a few select items, and unenchanted so you don't need to buy two to remove unwanted enchantments. Also, for 2-4 emeralds you can have them not only enchant gear but remove unwanted enchantments and repair them indefinitely for no XP or resource costs besides emeralds since they will accept damaged tools and give you new ones; see http://minecraft.gamepedia.com/Trading/Before_1.8#cite_note-enchant-6).
I might have a reason to farm villagers if I ever played in 1.9 though, in order to get Mending on all of my gear, which enables you to use them indefinitely for the cost of only XP (they repair themselves as you adsorb XP, which otherwise fills your XP bar), which is less than what my gear costs to repair on the anvil, and no anvils or diamonds required (the only resource I would even need while caving would be coal for torches and smelting iron and gold ore). Actually, I'm planning to add a a Mending-like enchantment in one of my mods (for 1.6.4) to replace renaming an item to keep the cost down (anvils and resources are still required) so I may do that in my next modded world (I've not spent much time updating the mod lately though since I'm having too much fun playing a basically vanilla world; I don't really care for all the additions since 1.6.4).
I enjoy mining and caving and don't consider that grinding.
Trading for emeralds to trade for whatever the villagers are selling that I might want is what I consider grinding.
I often come back from mining with a stack of diamonds and 40 XP levels and I have double chests overflowing with enchanted armor, weapons and tools to the point where enchanting new ones is beginning to feel like a grind.
If Mending is only going to be able to be bought from villagers I might consider that a reason to get into trading so that I could save a few inventory slots when mining/caving by not needing to bring spare pickaxes.
I really want to breed villagers but I don't understand how. The wiki is pretty confusing on that regard.
What is the fastest way to have them breed?
Make sure there are enough doors, see http://minecraft.gamepedia.com/Tutorials/Village_mechanics for what is needed for doors to be counted.
Villagers stop breeding when the village has 1/3 as many adult villagers as doors. (Beware that 20 or more doors and 10 or more villagers can cause zombie sieges)
Make sure they have enough food, either make sure there are fields and farmers to share the food or toss bread, potatoes or carrots to them. (It's best if the fields are filled with carrots and potatoes so the farmers inventories don't get clogged up with seeds.)
Trade with them.
Protect the village, villagers being harmed or killed can cause the rest to stop breeding for a while.
They won't breed willingly if there is no farmer, right?
Yes they will if you either trade with them or give them food.
According to the Wiki they become willing the first time you trade a certain trade or have a 1/5 chance to become willing when you trade a trade you've traded before.
They can also become willing by having either 3 bread, 12 carrots or 12 potatoes in their inventory.
(And that food can come from harvesting it themselves if they are a farmer or from being given it by a farmer or from you giving it to them.)
those of you wondering why i don't have an active RP (so far none). i try. but whenever i get to the rules section of it my computer restarts. computer: i realise what your telling me and i give up.
I'm not breeding villagers because in none of my survival worlds have i ever found a village. I'm doing just fine without having ever traded.
You can create villagers from zombie villagers, but please feel free to continue playing without villagers if you're doing so well. One might even wonder why you bothered to post if this advice fails to motivate you to change your viewpoint.

maybe to tell you that that won't change how i do survival.
everyone has their own way of playing, you can't change that.

Nobody is telling you to change. I made a thread with some advice that I thought would be helpful. You're acting as if I was speaking directly to you when I posted this thread. Don't be so vain, there are other people here.

well, I'm not the only one who doesn't look for villagers or hasn't found any. do you count them as other people? or not, because you made your feelings towards me pretty clear within 172,800 seconds.

You asked a question in your thread title, people are answering the question.
When you post on the forum you are speaking to everybody on the forum whether you want to or not.
In my opinion you are the one who comes across as vain.
The helpfulness of your advice (that most people playing minecraft would already know about) is your opinion, there's no reason to get annoyed because we don't all agree. I don't think anybody said you were wrong, just that our viewpoints are different.
That's what makes a forum interesting, reading other peoples opinions and trying to understand their differing viewpoints.

He is not trying to force other people to trade with villagers. He's just telling people why he thinks it's a good idea because he believes it might help someone out.

This post proves my point. Vonderbach, the insult was unnecessary.

Of course he counts them as people. He was referring to the people who agree that trading with villagers is a good idea (I am in that group). Regardless of Vonderbach's feelings towards you, he is in the "right"
Also, I am just curious, did you do the math on paper or with a calculator?

I pretty much only travel through caves and mineshafts.
Don't you ever surface? I do in order to get to and from the place I'm currently exploring and have come across 8 villages so far (7 if you don't count the one at spawn). I've also noticed them on the maps I carry while caving so I can see which areas in general have been explored and even a fully zoomed map shows villages (at least in 1.6.4 sandstone is gray on maps so desert villages show up as gray dots), plus if I see a desert or a plains I'll surface to see if there is anything in it (some do not show up on maps).
Of course, in 1.7 you can have very large areas with no villages thanks to the biome generation; in 1.6.4 they are more or less uniformly spread out (outside of oceans and ice plains areas) and possibly more common overall (2 out of 7 common biomes have villages; in 1.7 only "hot" climates have a similar or greater proportion of such biomes, this does make them easier to find if you are in such an area). Also, the sheer amount of caving that I do, and the very large area thus explored, is also a factor, I've explored up to 3000 blocks from spawn and filled in around 2 1/2 fully zoomed maps in one world (which is minuscule compared to what others have explored*).
*Here's a comparison of my world (left) to somebody else's (right), who also likes caving/mining; you can see that they have explored a good area of the surface while not mining/caving (most of the small, disconnected areas seen on the right are unexplored mineshafts and nearby caves, which do not show up on my world since I removed their torches; multiply that by 2.5 to get an idea of how common they are in 1.6.4):
And here is the world of a real explorer (only the surface shown):

TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
Different play styles!

I find it silly that you are arguing with me over how many villages I find.
