So I'm playing 1.2, and I made a nether portal. When I go to the nether through that portal, then go back through it to return home, it takes me to random cave instead. I destroyed the cave portal, then took the original portal again, but when I go back through it, it created yet another portal in the same random cave.
Basically, I can't get the portal in the nether to take me back home correctly. Help plz.

You spawn in random caves when you build a portal in the nether. Are you using the original portal to get back, or are you building a diff. portal when you get there to get back?

Once again, I took the portal and took the same one back, but it took me to a cave instead of home.
Seeing as a friend of mine has the exact same problem.... I reckon your building the Earth Portal somewhere at the newer height limit. Over Y128 that is.
That is the reason why it's not working.
The Nether only has 128 layers so it can't connect to another portal that isn't even in it's range technically. Therefor it automatically creates a new portal for you.
The 8:1 ratio for the Nether does not apply to layers... Height that is.
That is nothing new. When you use a portal in the overworld, it makes it in the nether with different terrain as close to that as it can, but not necessarily exactly because it is not going to put you in solid blocks. When you return it takes you back to a place as close as it can corresponding to the nether portal. Since there are 8 overland blocks for every 1 nether block, a slight shift in nether portal position can be considerably farther in the overland.
Back in 1.8 beta I made a portal that returned me near another base. I enclosed it in glass blocks with a tunnel to the base. Then I made a portal that seemed far away across the sea. When I went to the nether I was surprised to see my sign saying that portal went to my middle base. So 3 different spread out overland portals all went to the same nether portal and that nether portal always returned to the middle base. That made the nether a quick path between either outer base to the middle base. And I eventually connected the bases by elevated minecart track, except for a boat ride across the sea.

It wasn't over layer 128.
