It is true. The mobs need space to spawn, so their character models call for a little bit of area around them to be created. However, they can wander into 1 block wide areas, unless it's a spider or a slime that is wider than 1 block.

I was thinking that is the case as well. But somethings are contradicting that as well, I remember seeing more mobs in more open part of caves than the narrower portions.
So essentially a 2x1 space can spawn zombies skeletons and creepers but not spiders or endermen
a 2x2 area would allow spiders to also spawn and a place with a 3 tall hallway will allow endermen to spawn.
Additionally mobs cannot spawn on halfblocks that are not stacked or stairs.
I rarely see mobs in narrow areas (like branch mines), and only think that the mobs find there way into them from the larger main halls of my mines. So, sometimes, I think the code first looks for larger open areas to spawn before the smaller narrow ares. :\

I remember seeing a thread about mob spawning science, but that was around 1.4 beta or so. Any one know if any such threads still exist? <.<
Spiders only need a 1x1 space. I didn't use a spawner egg or anything. Completely natural spawn.
They can spawn on a single block but they need the air space available to do so. So above that single block is obviously more than the 2X3X3 space required. Yes spiders need a 2 block high spawning space not one, even though they are only one block high.
[edit] I just noticed the wiki says 2X2X2, but unless something changed in 1.1 that is not correct.
So the question, is this true or not? O.o
Natural spawning.
Skeletons = 2x1
Zombies = 2x1
Creepers = 2x1
Spiders = 1x2
Enderman = 3x1

Spiders actually need a 3x1x3 area (xyz) to spawn. It's not 2x2. Cave spiders can still spawn in a 1x1x1 area though.

True, a spider can spawn on a block like that. It's got open space all around it, making it a viable location.
However, they won't spawn in a 1 wide hallway.

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
Stupid 3D..
