That's all the fun of minecraft! Getting hopelessly lost, finding some materials to make a compass if you don't already (I keep them as a trophy of getting hopelessly lost) and trying to fin your way back home!
I agree. Before 1.8 huge and massive cave systems were fun to explore, because you could actually finish them. They were a project with an end. And when a cave was fully lit, you felt like you accomplished something.
Now they don't end. There is always a mineshaft or ravine that will connect you to a new cave or to a new mineshaft or yet another mineshaft... or was that the same mineshaft than the one before the last one...
Ground is like a swiss cheese now. Me no like.
EDIT: Just look at this mess of mineshafts connecting all the nice and separate cave systems into one huge endless maze.
Does anyone think they did this so making mob farms is alot harder. Because everytime I look at making one now I dont want to because now their are to many caves to patch and light up
I have a love-hate relationship with these new epic cave systems. I love them because there are so many ways to mess around, but it makes it practically impossible to build anything underground. First, let me tell you my story:
I began a new world in 1.8.1, immediately setting out to create a base in a mountain, just to recreate that old sense of discovery from my early days. I saw a natural cave in a mountain, so I headed into it, wooden blade in hand. Luckily, there were no mobs yet and there was plenty of coal. The cave opening was near the top of one of those epic mountains that is above block 100. heading down to sea level to make a more accessible door, I saw another tunnel branching off. I sealed it with glass and then put a door in so that I could mine it at night. I eventually got down into the cave system, where a nightmare encountered my eyes.
A ravine. I kitted myself out with torches, weapons and whatnot before heading into the ravine. I headed to one end where I found a branching cave system. Heading to the other end, I found a abandoned mine shaft. After a close call with a cave spider, I headed back into my base and set up a quarry. Digging down, I eventually hit this almost circular room. There were two exits from the room. I fought off the Endermen by emptying a bucket of water on the floor, then headed down one of the passages, which lead to a monolithic ravine. On one side of the ravine, (side, not end) there were a dozen caves that opened into the ravine itself. I explored these caves and found a passage up I ignored it, and went to an end of the ravine, where I found 3 ravines congregating at point.
Long story short, I explored the majority of those passages, and both of the cave systems linked together. In the end, I explored the abandoned Mine shaft. Surprise Surprise, It led into another MASSIVE network of caves.
As I said before, I both love and hate these cave systems.
I love them because I got so much loot that I completely filled a double chest with coal, iron and redstone. By the end of the exploration to date, I found 19 diamonds. The battles during the exploration where quite hectic and bloody, and to my eternal pride, I did not die :biggrin.gif:. It was also a golden opportunity to mess around with critical hits and the new bow and arrow system. I think that my survival was, in large part, due to the new health system. But that's a topic for another thread.
I hate them because they have literally made it impossible for me to build an efficient mining hub down near layer 16. It sucks, I'd normally have at least a stack of diamonds by this time in my world. Furthermore, I can't build my habitual mob grinder because of the mass of caves undermining the ENTIRE FREAKING SUBCONTINENT. SERIOUSLY. WHAT THE HELL? It is ridiculous how expansive these systems are. They're fun to explore, don't get me wrong, but they are a pain to build around. I normally end up with a well constructed system of rooms and passages that lead down to bedrock, but NOW, with the big, fancy ADVENTURE update, ADVENTURE seems to be the only thing you can do underground.
I do enjoy the caves, I really do, but I seriously feel that the expansive nature of these new systems wreackes havoc with people who want to, you know, settle down. On the plus side, I can now ADVENTURE at night, but I still feel that these caves are just TOO DAMNED BIG.

Just my two cents.
Not only did you share all the points I was going to say, but you said my two cents like I often do after long posts explaining my opinion.
I agree... before 1.8, there was a nice balance of cave to solid ground. I think the problem here is that he added a ton of new types of "caves" (mineshafts and ravines) without toning down the original amount of caves, so now there is way too many and the balance has been thrown off. The ground really is like swiss cheese in many places.
I would love it all types of caves would be toned down a bit, ESPECIALLY the mineshafts. As much as I like the concept of mineshafts, there's too many of them and not enough variety, so they become very repetitive very fast. There needs to be more variety to them, instead of just a series of identical corridors I would like it if there were sometimes underground rooms, larger corridors, vertical shafts with ladders in them, especially vertical shafts that occaisonally pierce the surface so it'll feel like the mineshaft actually has an entrance. They should be less packed and they should be coded to NEVER be placed on top of each other. Also, they need to be coded so that when they overlap a cave or ravine, the wood doesn't generate so that we don't have these weird floating wood platforms everywhere.
I like ravines and abandoned mines, but they need to be toned down in two regards. They are somewhat too big (more so mines than ravines). Also, they are far too numerous. If you use a mod like the dynamic map and look at the underground view, the mines and caves and ravines combined completely overwhelm the regular areas, as opposed to before when caves were a sporadic surprise. Now, you can't dig much at all without hitting a mine or a ravine or a cave. It's like a million dwarves went to town then suddenly vanished. I feel less like a miner or builder or adventurer and more like an archaeologist. It would be great if the mines were slightly less rare than the villages, so coming across one would be something of note, instead of something guaranteed to be hit after digging for 10 minutes in pretty much any downward direction from any location.
- Mineshafts are quite dense (I don't mind that) but they don't connect with each other properly, making one nasty mess.
- Caves + mineshafts + ravines combined do make the underground "too perforated".
The real issue is:
- Some people like going from cave to mineshaft to cave and randomly move through the underground landscape mining what they find exposed. ADD people tend to fall into this group.
- Others like an orderly approach to mining. OCD people tend to fall in this group.
- Minecraft needs a good balance so that both groups are happy. That balance used to exist in 1.7.3 but in 1.8 we lost it as we got the cool new stuff. The balance has to be re-established.
I am back from exploring mineshaft connected to ravine and huge cave. It was not easy ...
Basically, every time I start a world, I end up punching into a cave that I can't finish exploring.
The issue is much more severe with the addition of ravines and abandoned mines. It's not so much that these generation features aren't awesome, but there's nothing that separates them from each other. So a mine will punch into a cave system, that punches into a ravine, that punches into an abandoned mine, and it becomes completely impossible to explore completely.
I could probably stay underground until I hit the farlands without mining a single block if I wanted. I feel this isn't the desired result, I'd like to see some feature separation, if only a little.
This is like complaining about there being too much food in the world.
Sucks to be you, just don't explore them! It's optional, mine around it, or explore. It's your choice, your not forced to do anything. I personally love them, because it means more loot, but you don't NEED to go through them.
Sorry to burst your bubble pal, but it means less loot. There are way more air blocks replacing ore.
I'm glad I still have my alpha world. There is like 1 cave every once in a while :tongue.gif: I do a lot of tunnels and stuff underground, so I would go crazy always running into caves etc
They are quite massive now. I've given up on a few cave systems since the new update because they're too big.
Ya, I spent at least 12 hours(realtime)on the first Cave system I came across and still haven't fully explored it. Doesn't bother me much though, I have just decided not to explore the whole thing and go on doing other things. In time I'll probably finish exploring it as my Mineshafts breakthrough into new areas and I explore a bit around the breaches, but I don't care if I finish it.
The huge Cave systems are truly impressive, IMO, they rival Mountains in awe factor. Perhaps their number should be nerfed, making them more rare. The way things are now, it almost seems there is as much Underground areas as there are Surface areas(unlikely, but you could spend all your time there and never go to the Surface, if you chose to).
I HATE HOW THERE ARE TORCHES IN ABANDONED MINESHAFTS. I have a special torch placing method and if I (I am ADD) forget to put my torches, I'm lost in about 5 seconds.
This is like complaining about there being too much food in the world.
There IS too much food in the world. Seriously, I go out for 1 day (minecraft) and come back with enough food to keep my hunger bar full for at least 3 days irl. But that's a topic for another thread.
I spawned literally above a mine. After 37 minutes of exploring up, digging down for furnaces and some weapons and tools, I explored after I got some food as well.
... I WAS DOWN THERE FOR SEVEN HOURS before I was *mostly* done exploring it o_o.
I have school holidays, so I am @ a loose end. I spent at least 14 hours in my system, and I just found ANOTHER massive system. Seriously, wtf?
I agree with the sentiment. Prior to this, there was a nice sense of accomplishment in finishing off caves, something that's pretty rare now due to their size and complexity.

I wouldn't want to remove caves or mines or ravines, though. I'd just like them to be toned down.
