All cobblestone I dig out are converted to stone and stone bricks so I often run out of coal. It then depends on my mood if I go spelunking or tree farming. I currently find it more enjoyable to exploer a few caves and take coal from there, but I also have a rather large tree farm solely for the purpose of producing charcoal.
Charcoal is made from trees, and coal is found underground.
Trees are easy to find, and the only time you won't find any, it's in plains, so you won't find any cliffs with coal either.
Charcoal is easier to make on your first night then digging underground.
Using the calculations below, charcoal is more efficient than coal.
There is only a certain amount of coal in a map, compared to trees, that are a renewable source.
Trees are renewable, so you have an infinite source of them over time.
You need a pick to mine coal, and you can use your fist to mine logs.
You never know when you'll hit coal underground, but you can see trees from many block away, since they are exposed.
WITH SIMPLE MATH...
First of all, 1 log makes 4 planks that each make 2 sticks for a total of 8 sticks per log. You can transform some logs into planks to cook the logs, since they can each smelt/cook 1.5 blocks. So, with a basic 5 log trees, you could have 4 coal and 1 extra plank. (not even considering its sapplings as fuel!) (Note however, you need two sticks and three planks (so 5 planks - 2 sticks) to make a pick to mine the cobble to make a furnace, and 4 planks to make a workbench. The pick can last much longer however, to mine up to almost a whole stack of cobble.) However, you never know when you might run into coal, and you're using up your pick for nothing, wasting time!
...SO THE BEST SOLUTION IS CHARCOAL! (IN MY OPINION)
Finally, you can easily see that charcoal is much better than coal! Remember to stock up on lots of logs and sapplings!
I agree, in Minecraft, charcoal is better. But in real life, it's obvious that coal is better.

The part saying theres limited amount of coal in a map: A map is 8 times bigger than earth.
This is true, however I don't think someone will continue digging farther away from their base, probably at the center of the map, so charcoal would help in this situation.
The fact that charcoal is easier to get is hard to dispute. It is great for first-night experiences if you need torches. Most of the time you could simply find a small cave and have coal sitting right in front of you. My point is that you may want to make a small stack of charcoal torches to get started and then use coal once you establish a mine (sense most of us have too much coal once we get to mining anyway)
You can basically use coal (or charcoal, i suppose) to multiply your coal supply by 8. Lets say you have 8 coal (char- or otherwise) and you cut down enough trees to get 64 logs. Put it all in the furnace and you have 64 charcoal. That's insanely useful, and someone can cut down multiple stacks of logs in a day, so you aren't really losing much (especially when you think about how almost all of those trees will drop 2+ saplings, so your farm grows exponentially).
both are useful if you have trees and want fuel charcoal it you want to go mining find coal. They are both the same coal is ez er(I know the Spelling just lazy . STFU lol) to find.
First of all, your not asking which is bettter, your straight out stating that charcoal is better. Second of all, coal does not require a specific biome to spawn in, can normally be foound just about anywhere, viens can reach up to 24 coal lumps, that's 192 smelts there. And they can be found reliably at any level where ore can be found. Charcoal, on the other hand, is a last resort. You can't say that you don't need a pick to get it, you need a furnace. And how do you get a furnace? Stone! From underground! Where coal is! And then there's the wood requirement too. You need 1 log for making into charcoal, 1 log for making 4 planks, one of which will burn the log, 1 log for a crafting bench so you can craft a pick and furnace, and 8 more to burn with a lump of charcoal. There's an average of 5 logs in a tree, so you need to punch down 2.05 trees to make 8 charcoal, or mine half a vien of coal.
One is not better than the other.
