Utility Slot: an open slot for when I need multiple tools out at once (such as a diamond pick and a stone pick) or multiple block types out at once(such as dirt and logs when repairing endermen holes).
Environment Block: Blocks used for fixing the environment from endermen or player done damage.
Primary Tool: I keep three stone axes, three stone shovels, three stone picks and one diamond pick (if I have no diamond I keep iron) in my inventory at all times, which ever im using goes in this slot. default is a stone pick.

"I would agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong."
These are the things I always keep in my inventory/hotbar:
Slot 1: Sword
Slot 2: Pickaxe
Slot 3: Shovel
Slot 4: Axe (If underground,a Bow)
Slot 5: Torches
Slot 6: Cobblestone
Slot 7: Dirt
Slot 8: Bucket of Water
Slot 9: Food
In square 9: always Torches
8: usually something that I'll place, like cobblestone mostly
7: usually a consumable item
6: the same
5: a tool that i don't use very much, a Hoe
4: Axe
3: Spade
2: Pick
1: Sword!
I don't use a bow. it's rare that anything more than zombies (For some reason) spawn in my mines. When a skeleton or creeper does appear, I can handle them.
My default is:
1. slot: Pick
2. slot: Sword
3. slot: Shovel
4. slot: Bow
5. slot: Some kind of food
6. slot: Some kind of block(usually dirt)
7. slot: Clock
8. slot: Compass
9. slot: Torches
I use this setup unless:
- it's a monster hunt night
- I build something
- branch mine
- cave exploring.
Then it's a little different, but my pickaxe, sword and torches always stay at the same spot.
Pretty standard explorer loadout. Usually have a bed, two stacks arrows, spare stack of food and torches. Also carry an axe if I'm doing overland exploring.

Trying to get games written for windows to work on a Linux machine is like trying to put a diaper on an incontinent buffalo. Sure, you might get it all done, but you'll certainly be left with a huge mess, and it's very time consuming.
