I have been thinking about this for a while now and cannot think if a answer of why it was don this way.
Crafting of half blocks puzzles me in a way.
3 full size blocks create 3 half blocks. Ummm you see something wrong here? How does 3 full size give you 3 half size?
If you take 3 full size blocks and cut hem in half would that not give you 6???

What about the theory of conservation of mass? You spend 3 whole blocks and only get 1.5 in return...
With the properties of half blocks, it could be theorized that each block is condensed to half its size, making it more durable and harder to ignite than the normal block.
#1 It's a game
#2 That's how Notch wanted it
#3 Get over it
#1 I know it's a game
#2 I know that that's why he's the 1 who programed it.
#3 I'm not complaining just asking questions so there is nothing to get over. I just wanted other opinions.
I figured it was because you were carving them. If your take an actual stone block, you would have a hard time splitting it down the middle and getting two exact halves with no kerf (kerf being the material that is removed by the cutting process.)
My theory is that you use the blocks themselves to rub on each other and so smooth them out, eventually forming them into half blocks (time insanely accelerated because it's Minecraft). In this way, much of the block matter is lost.
Also, carving half blocks makes sense, because to craft stuff, you use the workbench, which is equipped with a saw, hammer and pliers (according to default textures)... Using those, how would one NOT lose most of the matter as shavings or dust?

That would be painful.
