I've been wondering about creepers as of late. I have many different theories at to what creepers actually ARE, and I'm going to discuss them. :biggrin.gif:
What ARE creepers?
When I first played Minecraft, I had no idea what kind of thing a creeper was related to. Spiders are related to spiders in the real world, skeletons are based off of human skeletons, and of course zombies are based of off (you guessed it!) zombies. So what are creepers? Are they radio-active humans, mutated by toxic waste? Are they shrunken green giraffes? Or are they just a random creation of Notch?
Why do creepers spawn in caves?
One theory I have to this is that creepers breed underground. That they make underground nests where they lay their eggs during mating season. Along with this theory is that SLIMES are the pupal stage of creepers. (The fact that slimes only spawn in specific chunks of the map supports the nesting ground theory) The large slimes are the almost full grown creepers, and the reason they split when you hit them is because baby slimes need to connect in order to form a full grown creeper. So, the large slime is just a "cocoon" that holds the two slimes while they conjoin, and when you kill the baby slimes the "slime balls" are actually the reproductive organ of each gender, so when they are combine into a full grown creeper, they are asexual, like worms.
Why is it that when a creeper kills a skeleton the skeleton drops a music disc?
The way I think of it is that inside a creeper there are 2 things that create an explosion, gunpowder and a special organ filled with an acidic liquid. When a skeleton shoots, it always aims for the most vital organ. So when a skeleton shoots a creeper, it will hit the organ filled with "creeper juice", for lack of a better word, it punctures it and it starts leaking. Now when the creeper explodes on the skeleton, most of that fluid goes flying, landing on the skeleton. When the "creeper juice" hits the extremely old bones of the skeleton, it doesn't dissolve it, creates a chemical compound that can be used to make records. Why it automatically turns into one, I don't know.
Why are there no creeper mob spawners?
Well, first let's answer the question, "What is a mob spawner?" My idea of a mob spawner is that they are magical. I think that some sorcerer imprisoned the essence of a mob into the mob spawner, and placed them randomly around the world. So why can't creepers be in them? Because, creepers are biological creatures. They reproduce by themselves. How are zombies and skeletons formed? MAGIC! And don't say, "Spiders aren't magic!" Because when have you seen a spider that large?
Thank you for reading guys, if you want me to answer other questions you can just post them below :biggrin.gif: (They don't have to be only creeper related)

Oh and here is a theory for why creepers explode: To either spread seeds or spores. It explodes near its prey so that rotting corpse can help fertilize the next generation of creeper.

While at work today a random thought popped in my head. For the sake of decency I'll wrap this in a spoiler, since I suppose it could be offensive to some (and no, it doesn't involve a penis.)
Creepers are like, well, marijuana. Moreover, a joint - and at that rate, of the 'creeper' variety.
Firstly its form: Cylindrical - presumably, Minecraft has a funny way of representing spheroids after all.
Color: Green - no brainer, though it could be argued that for this lampoon theory to hold water, they should be white.
Sounds like: Taking a drag.
After the sound: Explodey, which equates to the headchange effect.
Drops: Gunpowder (ash?)
Good job Notch, I'll bet you never even considered the implications of this strange little beastie.
