Hey everyone, so I decided to start a second journal with a brand new 1.8 world that I started last night, but it's modded and to me is something a little bit different....
So the mod I am using is - as per the title, VintageCraft, if you don't know what that is - check that link. It basically changes the terrain generation. Biomes are a thing of the past where land is generated by temperature, humidity, and altitude, allowing for nearly infinite amount of "biomes". (Thread source.) I should state I'm doing this not because I'm bored with Vanilla, far from it, I saw this as a challenge after watching a mod showcase and I like a challenge.
Day #1 & 2
So using logs for a crafting bench and sticks from "Branches" on a tree takes a bit of getting used to as will trying to find copper, the only new ore and only way to get planks by sawing up logs. This already makes for a challenge without the immediate use of planks available. I wondered to the dark side of a cliff over-hang and mined some stone - now, you don't blocks or cobblestone but small stones; but you still can make the basic stone tools this way. They will not last long at all however. I also found some stuff called lagnite, which I only found out later I could use for torches. After one unsuccessful mine into the ground it doesn't seem common however and I didn't find copper.
I didn't have to travel far when I saw a piece of land, a big mountain with Acacia trees that inspired me to build there, on top of the mountain. (Not in one for a change!)
I spent the night up here and cleared the area, as it needed levelling if I was to build any sort of home up here. By morning I was still at it.
As it was:
After some work:
It's only going to be a small house, which is a first for me as I usually like large houses but it will be safe up here, Of course I need to find my way down again, go mining and find some copper if I ever have my chance of progressing!

Nor did I but I think it's different enough from everything else. I was just gonna do my progress in the "What have you done recently" thread, but it's sooooo different I hope it'll get some interest because of that.

I started a mine literally round the back of the mountain (At the bottom of course), and that starts at level 170. I dug all the way down to -level 40 and not one bit of lagnite OR copper! I must get down to level 11 and see if there's lots of ores down there! Or maybe it doesn't work like that in this mod?! When I got to -40 something I inevitably run out of sticks and although I had a near full inventory full of different rock types I obviously couldn't make more tools - especially picks without sticks from branches. These basic stone tools just do not last, and I've used different stone types each time to see if one is better than others.
Inevitably I died a few times and that was fine I was able to recover my stuff, but one time I decided just to wander out and when I died that time it was far out, there was no way to get back (Without cheating) within 5 minutes to get my stuff so I had to start over with my inventory. Without copper I can't make a saw, without a saw I can't make planks and thus a chest to store stuff. I did eventually get back home, and continued mining for an extremely long time, finally getting to level 11 and branch mining. Know what I found? Nothing. Not a single ore after that and only a small bit of lagnite.
I'm beginning to get frustrated already.
Note: Since this I have found Iron and copper so no spoilers please as I need to figure this out myself.

Can I survive this new type of world however?!..

I think that's why I don't get too into mods, too much research to even find some ores.
Good luck!
The BEST way to mine diamond, layer 12 and you.
