I deciding to design and create a obstacle course on a SMP server and liking to keep much of the original Megaman feel to it. Platforms that appear in order, bottomless (extremely deep) and lava pits, and such. Everything self-resetting and low maintenance.
So, I was wondering, what are other ideas do other people put in obstacle courses that can be done in a vanilla fashion.
A thin ledge. A piston powered gate. When the gate opens, it lets water flow out, and attempt to knock the person off the edge. It turns off shortly thereafter, hindering efforts to simply swim back up.
A platform on top of a sticky piston, spaced such that you can make the jump when it is up, but will fail when it is down. You can do it in reverse by having a ceiling, so you can't jump when its up.
Piston powered blocks that open and close repeatedly, suffocating those trapped inside.
A timed switch to open a door briefly on the other side of a field of randomly placed cacti, forcing you to deftly run between them.
A large drop into a small pool of water. Misaim and die.
