I want to start making a grinder meant specifically to kill slimes so i can collect slimeballs for my server for trading and making pistons in 1.7
of course it wont be so bad to get other mobs in the mix as well, but slimes are my target.
since this is something that could be useful to others i decided to make a thread and hopefully we can collect some information and techniques here.
useful info on slimes:
-slimes will break into for smaller slimes until they are of the smallest size (which is harmless but will slip through 1-block holes
-if you do an extra half heart of damage than is required to kill a slime it will not break and will just die
-lava seems to kill a slime without breaking it
-slimes cannot swim and will drown
-only small slimes will drop slimeballs
-a huge slime (the largest) can potentially split into 64 small slimes or 128 slimeballs
-slimes require a minimum of a 9x9x5 space in the lower 16 levels (make bedrock your floor) and will spawn in any light conditions
any ideas on how to make a grinder that would get slimes?
What no one has mentioned that is very important for slime farming is the amount of damage to kill them. If a slime has 1 point of damage left and you do 1.5 points of damage to it it will die without breaking. This is an important point as you could potentially kill a huge slime without it breaking (goodbye 0-128 slimeballs!).
The best ways that I know of are to use non-sword items as weapons (hoe, shovel, ect), bows, or just punch them. Lava kills them without them dropping anything so that's out. I'm not sure if drowning works but that will only help vs small slimes in 1-2 blocks of water I think. Cactus might be the best way. I'll also point out that you don't 'have' to worry about other mobs if you don't want to. Slimes can spawn in any sort of light below level 16.
My idea that I may try this weekend is to make a ~21 block trench that is 5 blocks wide. I then build a series of these trenches side by side and stack them in such a way that it covers a 144x144 area (max spawning zone) on the lowest level. On one side of each trench I would place 5 arrow dispensers. after afking in the center of the grid for an hour or so I can activate the dispenser's then gather all my loot.
I'd probably add some sort of water trench system that pushes the items to a central gathering point but that's in the future. Also using pistons would make this much easier since small slimes can fit into 1x1 holes...
What do you think of this?
slimes can't swim, so lava won't be required, i'm gonna say a drowning trap of some description... how it will drown small slimes while collecting their drops will be tricky
how about this?
If the lime wool is a small slime drowning, the halfblock is a trapdoor and the notch is you underneath ready to open the hatch and collect your delicious slime balls
How are you going to deal with the huge/large/medium slimes when they clog your hole? You need to do something to break them up into the smaller versions.

cacti do half heart damage per hit, so placing a cactus or 2 in a slime room could do the trick. collecting the slime without running about the slime room may be trickier, could do a canal system with cacti flanking a single block opening that drops down and flows the slime balls to a collection point - might work

im thinking that we build 2 lava blade traps in a row designed so that in the first one large slime would be damaged and smaller slime would pass through unharmed then the second blade trap would damage medium slimes while letting small slimes through this would end with a simple drowning trap for the small slime that would lead to collection
found a good video about this on youtube:
it shows different methods of drowning them consecutively. small slimes can climb ladders, so you can make them go into an enclosed block and climb ladders, from there you can drown them and make that canal your item canal..
it doesn't seem to handle large amounts of slimes very well, because they bump into each other a lot and multiply, of course, but seems good enough considering the spawn rate..
some other facts:
- you need to find spawnable chunks. see here http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/385522-can-your-chunk-spawn-slimes/
- slimes share mob limits and most of the algorithm with other hostile mobs. So if you want to make a productive farm, light caves and the surface as well as your farm. It should also make a tiny difference to prevent slime spawning in other eligible chunks.
- if the game decides to spawn hostile mobs, it randomly chooses one. Every mob, including slimes, has the same chance. But there is an additional 90% chance for slimes not to spawn (even if inside an eligible chunk). So theoretically it's more like 1:10:10:10:10 (slime:spider:creeper:skeleton:zombie). Also, slime spawns will fail more often due to the height and chunk limit.
- slimes don't need light and spawn only below lvl 16
- sizes 0.6x06x0.6 for small slimes, 1.2x1.2x1.2 for medium slimes and 2.4x2.4x2.4 for big slimes
- even though big slimes are 2.4 big, they can't get out of 2 deep canals, but of course it needs to be 3 wide.
I have no clue how to even get slimes to spawn. I have 2 or 3 spawn rooms at level 6-8 and nothing spawns.
as mentioned, they spawn only in specific chunks. see my linked thread above.
also the rate is very low. if you didn't light up caves or play on big smp server (where mob spawning spaces and limits are shared globally), you might still need to wait 10 minutes or so..
Could you run the slimes through a series of chambers so they progressively are broken down?
So you would have a water stream that get narrower and narrower, so for the first room, the huge slimes are broken down, and so on. You could then funnel the small slimes into a room and manually kill them for the slimeballs.

Building legit is like peeing your pants. Everyone can see what you've done, but you're the only one who feels the warmth. Is it worth it?
Notch/Jeb will probably change the slime spawning to make either ..
A) Small ones appear on the surface and get progressively larger as you go deeper.
:cool.gif: All sizes appear on all layers at any time
C) They spawn only at night on all layers
D) The size of the slime will depend on the time of day (Small ones at day, Large and medium at night)
Well I can't see my self needing a grinder for the slimes, I just want to get them to spawn so I can collect their loot by hand. I made a 9x12x6 room a few blocks above bedrock and lit it up with torches. Nothing has spawned and I went to check it today and found no mobs were spawning in any of the nearby caves sooo...Hopefully with 1.7 someone can raise the spawn rate of the smallest slimes at least.
try using an existing cave structure, maybe make it bigger if needed. All initial slime spawns I have seen have been in existing caves. The one I use most often was a small cave (obviously big enough to spawn slimes), but it did not have slimes in it when I discovered it. I think it was a couple zombies at first, cleared them, lit the cave to prevent future spawning. couple days later noticed the "splat" sound, when checking and found a bunch of slimes in that cave.
so, maybe there is a better chance of them spawning in a cave that is not "man-made"
dont know, just a thought

There is no weapon/tool that deals exactly 1/2 a heart so you should only use your fists and try not to make the drop off of ledges or get them hit by fire or cacti if you want to do it safely.
water deals 1 damage, which is 0.5 hearts
also, small slimes should be able to drown in 1 high water, although larger slimes require a pillar of water i think

Tell me what that means for a +1 respect
have the slimes fall into the water, and when they drown they should drop the balls in it, and you can pick them up through the corner
