.. but it IS a glitch. It was not intentionally coded into the game, and therefore fits the one and only criteria for a glitch. . .If you want to say that pillaring is an improvement to Minecraft, say that! Don't say it isn't a glitch because that's just plain illiterate.
So.. no jumping over one block in height and no placing blocks while moving...
What game are you playing again? You might as well just call laying blocks a glitch and stand there like an illiterate...
Pillaring needs two things: We must be able to place blocks while moving/falling and we must be able to jump higher than 1 block. Remove one of them and pillaring will be impossible. Removing the ability to jump higher than 1 block would be game breaking, but option 1 could in theory be removed.
It's been established that you can essentially still pillar by making two stacks without any jumping during placement being involved, so that would be more of a nerf than a removal. Also I suggest you read The_White2086's post on the matter in this thread.
My post was an attempt at answering your question: "but I still enjoy theory and speculation as to what Notch would do if he wanted to remove it". I didn't think about the two pillar solution, but then again I also disagree that having 2 "pillars" next to eachother is pillaring. During pillaring you by definition jump and place blocks under you.
If it were 'removed', you would build a pillar like you'd mine straight down: place a block, jump on it, place two blocks next to you, jump on that, etc.
Changing this wouldn't prevent pillaring, it would just encumber it for no reason.
The main reason why pillaring, despite being ugly, is NEEDED is because it's possible to land in a 2-deep pit of bedrock. 2-pillaring? Impossible. Fishing Rod? Sure, you always carry those with you in a mine. Dying? What if you can't die there? No lava, TNT, Water, Monsters... You'd be uberfrakked without pillaring. Give me a good fix for that and cheaper ladders, and THEN we can talk about removing pillaring.
So.. does anyone have a reason as to why it COULDN'T be removed besides this? Personally i don't see why people would land in bedrock like this anyway, you don't HAVE to dig down past the first layer of bedrock.
You can jump in lava too, and die without using water, we'd all be screwed without water then right?
Oh.. right.. nether.. well guess it isn't that big a deal then.

Nope, we have pretty much concluded that that is the only thing that pillaring is actually needed for, there are work-arounds for everything else that we us it for. Some people enjoy seeing if they can find the bottom layer of bedrock (I do sometimes) and that can often land you is that exact position, I guess we would just have to stop doing that but if you forgot for a moment you could be in a bad situation.
The difference between falling in lava and being screwed without water and being in a 2 deep hole and not having water is that with the lava, you die and respawn, with the hole, you can't and get stuck there.
I'm still waiting for that guy that claimed that pillaring "is most definitely a bug not intended in the programming" (or anyone else) to bring back some evidence of that. spaz102, you out there mate? if you are going to come on here and shout about how it is a glitch and calling it anything else means that we are illiterate you could at least show up with some evidence to back yourself up

When I find myself in time of trouble/Mother Mary comes to me/Speaking words of wisdom/If you have stuff on you that you want to keep/make a chest and put everything into it./Now press F3
write down the coordinates that it tells you/Die and respawn/Write down the new coordinates/Walk to the first set of coordinates/pick up your stuff and walk back to the second set/Let it be
It's not a glitch, though. That's just how the game was made.
That was my impression as well. Would be utterly silly not to be able to place blocks under you. Honestly, the current dissatisfaction over boosters would probably be nothing compared to the shitstorm generated if he removed that.

Which reminds me. Does anyone have evidence or proof that it's a bug/glitch?
Even if this glitch (which I do not think is a glitch at all) is removed, one would still be able to pillar with a pillar that is 2-blocks wide. So what good would it solve?

And I'm glad. Change is great, but not change that will just make things more tedious.
