I'm not sure about the height, but you can grow them right next to each other. You won't get enough saplings to re-plant though, so I would recommend about 4 blocks gap between each tree so there are more leaf blocks to drop saplings. Experiment until you get it right.

I did try to make a underground Acacia Tree Farm with a 4 block space, but it didn't seem to work very well because they tend to grow at angles and odd shapes. You probably should try 5 or more on all sides of each tree.

The problem with acacia trees is that they grow diagonally. The wood blocks that are generated can be around 3-4 blocks away from the base trunk in either of the x/z directions. Unfortunately, there is no way to control which direction the tree will grow.
That being said, if your trees are spaced any closer than 6 blocks, it will be very likely that some of them will not grow.
EDIT: Nevermind. They actually do grow next to each other. I must have spruce trees on the brain.
