This may have already been shown here, but since the search is down..... and if this is already common knowledge, well, I haven't seen these posted here, and if it seems it should be obvious, I've seen some boosters that just don't make sense or don't work reliably, so.....
A new take on the old glitch style booster. The loop on the right contains a continuously moving cart, the upper left corner of that loop is tied to the switch. Get in the traveling cart on the left, hit the switch and the booster cart sends you out and resets back to the loop. If something happens and the booster cart goes in the wrong direction around the loop, it will still boost & reset correctly. Ignore the note blocks and door in the upper left, I was fooling around with something, not related to the actual booster. This should work with a pez dispenser of your choosing. Since my carts are always out & back, not in a loop with a dispenser, I have a block to stop the traveling cart, you could just as easily have it on an unpowered track or plate to stop it in the right spot.
Since the booster cart is in a small loop, you won't get the situation where you hit the button at exactly the wrong time and the booster either goes the wrong direction or gets stuck.
Now, if the rumors are correct and Notch decides to make the booster glitch not work anymore, there's an actually much simpler way to get going, but it's less cool and doesn't get you maximum thrust. Again, should be obvious, but just putting this out there for people to check out, no need to flame, "well, DUH!".
The slope booster. There are any number of ways do deliver the cart to the slope, which is just an unpowered track section. Get in the cart, hit a button to power it up and it runs. You will need a few sections of powered track almost immediately to keep you going, but it's pretty much fool proof and as simple as possible. Thing is, you won't get the maximum thrust you get from a glitch booster, but if Notch removes the glitch, then it will still work.

To tell them how to live is to prevent them living.
Yeah, textures are mostly JohnSmith, with my own tweaks.
As for the loop, yeah, it is easier to just start on a slope and be done with it, but the booster gives you max momentum without all the extra powered tracks you'd need for the long haul. Plus, I kinda don't like the idea of having to get in a slanted minecart, lol.

How does this handle the chunk being unloaded? Does the looping cart get stopped? How many trials have you done?
Seems to work OK unloading the chunk. At least I've gone to the nether, where my main tracks are, traveled far, returned to the over world and then back to the nether and everything still seems to be working. That was one of the problems with the perpetual motion cart that I didn't like. It seems it works OK with the circle boosters, but you never know. It may all be moot if Notch decides to fix the cart glitch, anyone know for certain if he plans to do that? If so, that whole concept is trash and you'll have to go with the slope rail.
I mean, there should just be a way for a minecart to "know" which direction to go when stopped on an upowered rail that suddenly gets power. Maybe the direction you're facing, eh? That would solve the whole thing.
