Vanilla survival tips?
So first, you should find the mystery chest, which has a BUNCH of nice stuff like iron tools, arrows, potions, and more. To find it, look for a water pond, lake, or river that is at least 3 blocks deep. You need to jump under water but don't move at all, just let your player sink. Normally, you will drown after 20 seconds, but if you hold down L for those 20 seconds, you will be teleported to the Mystery Dungeon, with the mystery chest
Basically, you need to find a Project to do. Something big, but which has a lot of little parts that each in and of themselves don't take a terrible amount of effort, and which regularly give you a sense of accomplishment and an improvement in your situation. So, say, building a 1:1 scale reproduction of the Great Pyramid of Giza, like we tried to do a few map resets ago on our server, isn't that great a project. It's just a crapload of monotonous desert-levelling, sand/sandstone mining, and building nigh-identical courses of slating pyramid wall. Impressive when done or even partly-done, but booooring to work on.
My favorite project is to build an elaborate underground base that has pretty much everything you CAN do in Minecraft, without the need for further visits to the surface. Pretend a nuclear war or other major disaster is imminent and you need to dig out your rest-of-your-life survival shelter underground. So you'll need underground farms for every type of crop, including underground tree farms for every type of tree, a darkroom-based mob grinder for hostile-mob drops, underground mining tunnels, all-underground tunnel access to one or more dungeon-based XP grinders, an underground NPC village for trading purposes, sealed-rail-tunnel access through the nether to a nether fort with blaze/wither-skeleton grinder, the works.
Oh, and underground pens for every type of livestock, WHERE THE ANIMALS CAN BE BRED AND SLAUGHTERED in good old Dr. Strangelove fashion. All with a capacity to support several players (yourself and your harem of hot members of the opposite sex with whom to repopulate the surface once the radiation dies down), so no, not just "two cows in a 3x3 pen", I mean a large pen with at least 8 cows/pigs/whatever.
Bonus points if the base is camouflaged from the view of the surface so casual passers-by among the mutants who survive the apocalypse don't notice and lay siege.
It's a huge project, but each individual bit shouldn't take more than a couple of days of work, and each bit you add enhances your ability to do the rest quicker and better.
Other project ideas include:
* Elaborate UNDERWATER base, elaborate tree-top Ewok/Elven village, etc., as variations on the underground base above.
* Take over an NPC village, turn it into a walled city with dozens or hundreds of villagers, iron golems defending the ramparts and a large castle keep in the center as your personal citadel.
* Build a base entirely in the Nether, except for a nether portal, bedroom, and underground mine in the overworld (no iron/diamond/etc. ores in the nether). Include as many of the elaborate-underground-base facilities above as possible.
* Build a base entirely in The End, except a bedroom/mine at the End Portal in a Stronghold. All your farms, the NPC village, etc. all go in The End. Completely terraform Ender Island to be a floating island with dirt/grass, trees, et cetera, and a walled city for your NPC's. Leave no place for Endermen to spawn except in an Enderman Grinder, far out on an artificial peninsula.
* Build a 1:1 scale replica of your house, your high school, your local church, your favorite restaurant, or some landmark or other building important to you and which you can reproduce from memory or reference photos.
* Once you've built such a base, acquired enough wealth and resources to make the game seem easy, and have so many grinders going on that just collecting and sorting the drops is a full-time job....pack your personal inventory and enderchest with whatever portable wealth you want to bring along, and abandon your base to go exploring. Travel overland and by boat, perhaps even dig a long tunnel through the nether and then portal back to the overworld many kilometers from your old stomping grounds, and start over from scratch, incorporating into your NEW elaborate base all the hard-won lessons you learned building the last one. Build it bigger, and better, and more well-organized.

I built a house on the private server I am and I keep adding random things to it.
