vyew, 2 or 3, I think. I believe if you cover them up, they will spawn anyway, around it, unless you cover it up more. To disable, I'd just suggest placing torches on opposite sides of it.
Hi guys, this is something I wasn't really ever sure about in Minecraft, but when you die (in my case I died really far down in the caverns thanks to a bunch of skeletons and zombies...) the items you drop, will they stay there forever or will they disappear?
I wasn't carrying that much valuable stuff, just some redstone, a bit of iron ore and some steel tools, but I still want to go and get the stuff if possible.

Ahh thanks, I tried searching for some keywords in the thread but didn't find that:P
No problem. I'd ask you read all the questions, but that may be a bit much, since there's 65 or so. XP
What key words did you search? I can fix it so they will bring you to it.
I made a tower +60 meters above sea level and discovered I'm on a big island. I see no land beyond the sea which borders all sides of the island (which is why it's an... um... island <sigh>). Is there land beyond the 'fog' that I just can't see. If not, what good is an 'infinite' map when you are on an island?
I'm playing Alpha, and I only ask because exploring is a big draw to me. Based on what I've seen of my island, there's not that much to explore. Should I play a different map type?

You can regen and make a new map, but you can also choose to explore. It's not literally infinite, but it's unreasonably large once you explore it. It will continue to add more and more as you explore, so, yes, there is more you can't see.
Oh, and you can swim across the ocean if you'd like, to find a larger landmass.

Ok i must be missing something... i made flowing water and lava meet and it just created cobblestone... i thought it is supposed to make obsidian?
ALSO why wont my bucket pick up lava when i right click the lava with it?
Because the lava that collided with water (and what you're trying to pick up) isn't source/spring lava. This block would be where it all flows from. They cannot be created. In lava physics, a source block exists, from where flowing blocks are created, which you can't scoop up or move.
This is also why you can't pick up the lava with a bucket; you're trying for flowing lava, not source/spring lava.
As for obsidian, that requires water to and source/spring lava to collide. You got cobblestone from flowing lava and water.

If you mean that there's a thick fog obscuring your view, there's a Render Distance option in the Options menu, where you can manipulate your fog setting. Or you can press 'F' to change the fog level (removing it completely). You could also mine downwards. I'm sure you'd find a few caves under the island. But for more land to explore, you'll have to make a new world, build a boat, or get digging.
I have really enjoyed this FAQ I use it a as a regular reference as I learn the game and get better at it.
In your FAQ you state that you are unsure if mobs can climb ladders. They most definitely can climb ladders. I recently built a number of simple kill pits due to large problems with spiders and creepers ambushing me every time I left my base.
A kill pit in nothing but a 3 by 3 pit with an infinite fire block in the bottom center. Mobs fall in jump around and eventually set themselves on fire, die and drop items. I placed ladders on the side to make item retrieval easier. I then watched to see if the mobs would use the ladders. I watched as a skeleton, a creeper and a zombie all escaped the pit.
Needless to say I removed the ladders and dug access shafts protected by doors.
it is not as elegant as some of the water traps but it works.

why do my mobs not spawn? i just started useing minecraft alpha. anyone have any ideas?
If you've got peaceful on, that's why. Also, they do not spawn within 24 blocks/meters of you or your spawn point, so you'll have to go looking for them, most likely.
Can someone tell me the basics of rollercoasters? I mean I understand that if I make a railway downhill, and place a cart there and click on it, I will go on the cart and it will start going downwards and gaining momentum. So I can use that momentum to go upwards, but not too much (if I don't have enough speed).
But what if I want to go uphill without any previous momentum? Is there any way to actually make me start moving the cart while it's standing still? (without pushing it)
I assume this would involve redstone if it's possible.. What exactly must I do?
You'd have to push a minecart. Maybe not the one you want to move, but one would have to be pushed some time. If you had a minecart run into it, they'd both propel forward at a fast rate, if you did it right. In the case of a rollercoaster, you want to look up boosters.
This question might sound dumb, but will MineCraft keep the singleplayer option or will it eventually go all multiplayer? I'm not that big into multiplayer games, so I'd like to know if the singleplayer game will remain an option before I buy the game.
Question- How do you get custom mods/graphics in MineCraft? I tried Dokus RPG texture with MineCraft.ModInstaller. It doesn't work, only crashes the game.

I see no reason it would remove single player.

I don't use mods, but I believe they are installers. If they screw up the game, I can't help you much; they're mods. They're not official, and I didn't make it. As for textures, you take the images and replace the appropriate images in the minecraft.jar
The way that most people do it is to make a hollow (with levels) trunk out of tree blocks, and when you get to where you want the bottom "leaves" to be, make branches that go out and slightly up out of tree blocks. Place a piece of dirt on the end of the branch and plant a tree. (You can also put a torch at the base of the tree to help it grow faster.) Do this all the way around the level planting 10-12 trees. (Or however many you want to try to squeeze in there.) Once those trees grow, you can branch out and up again from the end of that branch. Than you go up 5 blocks or so, and make another level of the trunk and do the out and up branches again. Do about 2-3 levels or so and voila, a mega tree. Always watch your height and width and plan accordingly when planting to make sure you have room for each tree to grow.

There are 128 layers in which blocks can be placed? 64 above ocean level and 64 starting at ocean level and going down to the void?
Karilyn, I believe so.
