Dont get this computer...It heats like an oven and cools only when i off it. Cant do much about it as i am low on$$$.
I usually just start gathering wood and cobblestone. Once I gather at least half a stack of cobble, or at least until my wooden pickaxe runs out, if I have time I'll search for food. Now that they added mutton in the 1.8 update, I'll only have to find sheep for wool and food, which is a score. For my first night, I'll usually create a makeshift house in the area where I mined the cobblestone
Obviously, chop down a couple trees and make a simple base... After that is supplied, and if it's still daytime, I go out hunting for sheep.. If not, I just kill a bunch of spiders....
First I calculate the trajectory of the sun and march due East for 10 days and 10 nights. I stop for no mob, ignore any terrain. On the morning of the 11th day I dig straight down in the dirt with my bare fists until I hit stone. I sit silently in my hole plotting the demise of any creature that dares walk over my precious hole. I wait for another 10 days and 10 nights, and on the 21st day when the sun is directly over head the transformation begins... At first my neck extends and fur grows all over, a snout protrudes from my face and by nightfall on my 21st day I have turned completely into a llama. Not just any llama, but a llama so famished and hungry that I am dead by midnight. And so I begin a new world and repeat the process. This minecraft game is weird.

"It's just like the story of the grasshopper and the octopus. All year long, the grasshopper kept burying acorns for the winter, while the octopus mooched off his girlfriend and watched TV. But then the winter came, and the grasshopper died, and the octopus ate all his acorns. And also he got a racecar. Is any of this getting through to you?"

That's actually hilarious. Anyway, I agree with you completely, Minecraft is weird.

Ha, I got a good laugh out of reading that.
Anyways, first thing I do is scout out the spawn. Then I gather wood and make a cave base for the first few nights.

Lol, I thought I was the only one. In all seriousness though, I live in a cave until I get the materials I need, and then transform the cave into an awesome MAN CAVE!
Well, first I make sure I didn't Spawn in an Ocean Biome ( ), especially one with no visible Trees or ( ) islands around ( ). But next, I remove roughly the 4 Blocks around my non existent ("this MC Game is weird," end Quote) feet, then place them at diagonal corners, thus marking the Spawn (minimally), for later Mapping and Navigating purposes /Calculations (I hear Mapping's easier in 1.8, but I was out on Biome Exploration..).
Then I go on Tree quest, not even bothering with Food or Shelter 'til I have Tools, Mining next (not even bothering with most Tools 'til Cobble for Stone stuff). I make a point of Not Cutting down the First Tree s I see, both for appearances ("sustainable forestry"), and so that I can just as easily re find the same whatever forest type (Can "see the forest for the Trees"), again.
Eventually, I'll try to return to Spawn, to if I feel like it make a Box around (ideally all) the re Spawn points (from deaths from..) after inevitable "Your bed is missing or obstructed," Bugs. These basically Error (we can't "test" that, usually) messages aren't nice, but nor is ReSpawning amid Hostile Mobs which then Grief the otherwise pristine Spawn
Almost everybody talks about getting wood and right away building a house. Nobody wants to get food? The odds are, You're gonna get hungry while building. You could probably guess what I would vote for. Here's what I usually do. Get food, get wood, and look for a place to set up my permanent home. (I will probably slay some animals for food along the way.)

outright first thing i do, turn a full 360 see where im at, if i see a nice river with trees then i run to it punching grass for seeds as i go, then i punch a few trees and clear the leaves then replant them. This is vital if playing on multiplayer. Last thing you want is to leave a big clear patch in an otherwise tree filled area. Once i have some seeds and wood i go underground, down there i make my wheat farm for food and an eventual tree farm

1. Wood for house
2. To get weapons / tools
3. After weapons / tools you're armed
4. When armed with weapons n tools go get alot more wood and use shovel for dirt and what not.
5. Just keep doing same
So overall chop wood first make yourself a craft table, tools, and weapons :>

then make a house for shelter
then mine for stone and iron
